Re: Midlengths
I take when there's a little more size/quality. It's 7.2 so needs some room to breathe.
Foam thru the middle but quite foiled out esp the tail section.
If I was to get another it would be say 6.8 to 6.10 with the e-wing.
That would cover an awful lot of conditions.

I've always been a bit spewing I didn't start with the bonzer egg. Poor choice going the mini merk.tootr wrote:I take when there's a little more size/quality. It's 7.2 so needs some room to breathe.

Re: Midlengths
Thanks for the heads up. The 6'6 would be perfect for me I reckon. I think I'll end up going down the modification path. I rarely surf the waterskate these days, and if it doesn't work I can always get a box adaptor and go back to using it as a thruster. Pretty low risk venture I suppose.saltman wrote:Cheap option

What did it cost to get the box put in properly? $150?Beerfan wrote:I reckon that'd work fine. Spend the $$ and get it done by a pro. Will work great IMHO. I got one put into a quad and it worked fineJET01 wrote:Boys I've got a Round tail 6'8 x 21 x 2 3/4 Miller Waterskate that I've had since 2008. It's still in pretty good nick as I had Grant glass it strong.
As it's a bit wider in the tail than my big red 6'8 single I'm thinking about getting a finbox put in it so I can ride it as a 2 + 1.
Have any of you tried to do something similar in the past?

Re: Midlengths
Do you like (did you like?) the waterskate (as a tangent question)? I'm thinking something wide and stable and easyish will suit me for the days my mini mal isn't what I want to use. I just weave around rather than hitting lips and stuff. Would probably go around 6'8 cos I'm unfit and intermittent (and 85kg or so and incompetent).

Board: 6'8 x 21 x 2 3/4 round tail thruster (toying with the idea of putting a single fin box in it)
Best fin set up I've found so far were FCS PG7 side fins with an M5 centre fin rear. Nice and drivey, but loose for turns. Had a magic day at Boneyards one day I'll never forget. Haven't changed the fins since.
Bought my 6'8 waterskate in 2008 coming down from a 7'10 mini mal. Still use intermittently now when I have bouts of back pain or when I've been out of the water for a while and need to ease back into it.
I've made many posts raving about how much i love this board.
Where abouts do you do most of your surfing CTD?
I've also had a 6'2 waterskate squash tail thruster which was a great board. I've left feedback on both boards on Grants website.
Have a chat with Grant and he will sort you out.
I'm going to assume your mini mal is a 7'6 as that's a pretty common size. 6'8 or 6'10 would be a great start. I'll actually make a prediction as say that once you get one of these you'll surf the mini mal far less.
If you want to get an idea for size, try and find someone that stocks Torq surfboards. They make a 6'8 funboard which is pretty similar in size, but that's where the similarities end. the waterskate has more modern bottom contours where the torq is a flat to vee bottom and through the fins.
If you ever get down to cronulla, send me a pm and you can take mine for a paddle. Grant has moved his whole show back down the coast to Milton again so it's a bit tricky to get your hands on one before you pull the trigger.
there are a few v-skates on the gumtree at the moment. They aren't a bad option in the same size. To my knowledge there's not much difference between waterskates and vskate apart from the narrower plan shape. Pretty much everything else is the same.
Anyway, enough of my diarrhoea...
Good luck.

I got mine too long and thick i reckon Steve. I've had a few good sessions on it, but just never fell in love with it.steve shearer wrote:JET01 wrote:I've always been a bit spewing I didn't start with the bonzer egg. 6'2 x 20 x 2 5/8 at 80kg... needed to be 5'10 to 6'0 I thinks.
