2+1 Set Up's - NPJr

Recently acquired a Neal Purchase Jr (NPJ) "Snubb", 2+1 set up, never ridden one before, trying to get the set up right.

Have tried with 6 1/2 centre fin a quarter inch from the tail end with GL side bites and it goes ok but lacks a little drive, NPJ recommends larger side bites which I tried but the board for me travels way to straight and tough to turn with this set up (he has a site with fin recommendations).

Looking for bite and drive. Board is 6'6 x 20 1/4 x 2 3/4 and I'm 98kilo and paddling and float not issues but just dont feel like I'm getting the most out of it. Anyone have one of these boards and can recommend a 2+1 set up with fin sizes.......or recommend a good 2+1 set up.

Sounds like your centre fin is too far back (with the bigger sides), or too small.
But I'm guessing you already checked that on the NPJ site?

My experience suggests to keep the sidebites small, or use really stiff upright ones if you go bigger.
With the centre fin, I use fins that are quite raked, but flexy. Need a bit of base.

I'd probably go up in size from what you're using, as much as a 7.5" centre.
This sort of shape.

Or if you want a snappier fin

Don't be afraid to pull the centre fin up further than you think looks right.

Sounds like a board that is going to need some wall or juice to get up and going.

And ridden off the rails.

But agree with Alaboo......try a basier centre fin.

Hi mate,
i have a coupla NPjs... incredible boards!!!
I've messed about with widow set-ups for my 6'6" rounded pin-tail 'step-up', and found this combo works best for me (5'11" @ 85 kegs):
True Ames 7" Bonzer with FCS TC aqua line (trailers from the quad) as side bites. The TC's have a wide base and small tip, and sit way back in the FCS plugs. The True Ames centre is similarly foiled to the TC's, yet more upright. I've pushed mine way up in the box to align with the trailing edge of the side bites.... great drive and release.
hope this assists

I reckon not enough people ride 2+1s as good wave boards, they've kind of been lumped in with rubbish small wave boards.
I generally prefer them to thrusters.

I've got this on the way...

Not as long as it looks...

Some crazy tech involved, and some sweet handfoiled fins coming with.
I'm yet to lay hands on it, but I'm frothing already.

Here's a thread to keep 2+1 fans reading for a while.
http://community.magicseaweed.com/viewt ... 2f&start=0
I like using the rear fins from a Stretch quad set in fibreglass as side fins.
The plastics flex too much for me (95 kgs). Or a DVS sidebite from Shapers with an 8" Greenough 4C.
Also really like the front side fins from the FCS bonzer set with a 6.5" hand foiled fibreglass centre when the waves are fast, down the line.
BTW C-drive fins were doing a special offer (still going I believe).
Buy a set of fins and use them and if you don't like them they will give you a full refund.
They have 2+1 sets and you choose the sizes....yeeeww.

And if you're near the Sunny coast I want a go on them...the fins I mean...I don't want a go on the Schnubb as I know I will want one.

AK, the board looks like a full weapon.

Those C drive fins look interesting, nup not in Queensland in Sydney....but i have some G XQ quad rears I will try them out.

Yeah the board likes rail to rail movement, has a really slippery, snakey flow to it and is a wall chaser, slightly similar to a bonzer egg I have but less back foot more neutral. i wish i could ride them a 1/100th as good as NPJr, so light on his feet for a lump of a guy (like a good boxer).

Are the G-QX rears a PC or a glass flex?
As I said I find the glass flex too flexible for my taste so the stiffer fins work well for me.
Excuse the re-post of the 2+1 thread link as I don't look at the shortboarders only forum very often...I'm obviously getting old.
Enjoy that Schnubb.

I just aquired a 6'2 x 19.5 NPJ widowmaker. Glassed in fins. The sides are bigger than a gx, and the centre is prob about 6". Front of the Centre fin is just behind the back of the sides.

Let me know if ya want any proper measurements.

Hows it go? Whats the base of the centre fin if you know off hand?

Pushed the centre fin up a 1/4 inch, and using GX-Q's as sides and it works great now.

Hi,
I have a 6 1 firewire el fuego which i only ride as a quad, as i like the shape would putting in a fin box successfully convert it into a two plus one? Is there more that i need to consider other than buying side fins, the box and center fin? I d get it done professionally, but was wondering if it would work.

unfortunately i cant afford a np jnr at the mo
