Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
I'll probably be selling my McCoy single fin nugget on ebay soon by the way. Part of a sadly necessary quiver cull.

Don't be sad...my latest quiver cull is the best thing I've done in years.
I wonder if "quiver cull" can become a widely used term amongst the resident board junkies.

Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
'cull' is too harsh, its more like passing them onto another home, cull means to kill off and would never want to kill off my boards, its always sad , maybe quiver shuffle, rearrangement....

You've got a lot "more" invested in your boards than a non shaper I reckon.
I used cull because it was clinical, surgical and done without remorse.

Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
I grabbed a copy of smorgasboarder magazine over the weekend and they have a nice astron zot, lazer zap and mccoy section....its 5 or 6 pages with words from the man himself. Nice info about single fins and rails and of course the dome bottom and fat arse tails.
its also online at www.smorgasboarder.com.au and they have a free ipad app
the mccoy interview starts on page 140
Any further ride reports or thoughts on the zot? Has anyone ridden one sub 6ft like 5"6 or something and can compare them to a fish for us?

That Smorgasboarder article is excellent.
Especially the pencil diagrams.
They explain alot.
Actually I think McCoy has explained more about how his boards work in this article than ever before.

Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
old grom has sold his Zot to me, ive had it almost a month and i like it But not as much as i like my other 2 nugget singles.
SO, if anyones interested in getting a 8.5/10 Zot for around half the price mCoy charges them PM me
i'm near crescent head so it can be picked up from there OR i can put it on Surfcargo or Surfreight, and it'll get to sydneee to noosa safely.

Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
Hi.
I'm looking for some advice please. I currently own a 6'8 Astron Zot and a 6'6 Nugget and love them both and they have improved my surfing no end; however I am finding them rather difficult to duckdive in bigger waves (hollow waves are easier but fatter are more difficult) due to the sheer volume of the boards.
I am a fit 33 year old; 5'10 and 76kg of average ability; I surf or bodyboard (dk) a least twice a week (family permitting). I am thinking of going smaller, but the question is how small. I am looking at another Astron Zot or Potbelly or even possibly a Lazor Zap.
My thinking is to go in the 5'10 range for the Zot or 6'0 range for Potbelly - the idea being that I could go shorter on a Zot due to it being slighty wider. Do you think that this would be too much of a drop ?
Any advice on these boards in the smaller range (especially the Zot).
Thanks, Nathan

Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
Don't be scared of going shorter. I'm 5'10 and 82kgs a 6'6 nugget is my goto board. I also use a 6'0 lazor zap for a wee bit more liveliness. Sure you will have to get into waves a little later but you adjust. Heaps more fun!
The zap wil be very different to the zot.

Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
Even by McCoy standards you're carrying a bit too much volume in those boards for your weight. You could easily knock off 4 inches on those lengths, robably more.
Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
Cool, thanks guys. Thats what I thought.
Do you think I could get away with a Zap ?

Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
I haven't surfed a zap since around 1982. So I couldnt say. I'd think though a nugget or pot belly or Zot in the right size would be perfect.
Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
What do you want from the board? What are looking for the board to help you achieve?
They are chalk and cheese the zap and the zot.

Re: review of Mccoy Astron Zot
I found the zap a horrible ride in comparison to my 5'8 nugget. If duck diving is the issue the wider nose and volume in the nose is the issue. It all depends on your ability as well as far as volume is concerned with these boards. If you like the zot get a smaller one. I noticed a 5'6 McCoy on eBay. Think it maybe kookster's small wave board?

Thanks Guys for the comments.
Essentially, I want a board for surfing medium sized surf (3-6 foot) that offers enough volume to get in early on the waves but also be able to duckdive easier through lots of whitewater (as we tend to get on our beachbreaks). I want to be able to put in the turns when I want; however I would say that I am not really looking for a snappy, vertical type riding board.
Give my weight/height, etc and what I want from the board I'm now thinking a 5'10 Zot or maybe a little smaller will be the best bet.
Batoes - Yeah, I saw Glenns Potbelly on Ebay and would certainly be interested; however I am in the UK so the shipping kills it.
I think that you are right in that the wide shoulders and nose make for harder duckdiving.
Cheers, N
