BB for a tubby?

Post by sailfish » Wed Oct 25, 2006 4:01 pm

Ok im not all fat, but weighing in at 112kg, but im losing it now im on recovery from injury. Im 6ft1.

I dont have more than $150 to spend as I just bought a longboard too.

I just want something half decent that will float me.

I have noticed on websites a lot of 43" boards going for less than $150, just the budget models from the bigger brands like manta etc.

I have also noticed some are crecent and some are bat tail.

On the premise that i will be 100kg by xmas, will 43" float me well enough for now. Also i presume a bat tail will give me more float?

yeah thanks coops, read it before. the boards are to expensive for wat i need. also the sizing chart doesnt reflect crescent or bat tail, where other sites if have seen and manufacturers for the same length the bat tails seem to have more buoyancy.

so if anyone can comment on that and the above questions would be cool.

if i was you i would get a 42.5 or 42.75 bat tail. the bat allows for a bit more bouyancy.

Realistically you're not going to get something good brand new.

I'd be looking on ebay for a secondhand board in good nic.

Cresent and Bat tails dont differ in bouancy, they differ in function
A Cresent Tail will generally hold a better line with less tendancy to lose a rail, while a Bat Tail is better for spins etc.

are u 100% sure on that fact beaver? if so can u show me where u learnt that information?

i mean everyone knows a bat tail is functionally different. but wouldnt the extra foam add up to more buoancy?

maybe that board in 42? it should be fine as u are losing the weight and would be a bit better as u slim down

I suppose it could make a slight difference, but the things that would really alter bouancy would be the size, thickness. And i suppose whether its PP or Dow would have different a bouancy.
I dont think bouancy is gona be that much of an issue, it shouldnt really effect your surfing, just paddling.

last time i heard, Reo didnt even make stringers for their boards. if ur a big dude ur probably gonna wanna hit up a stringer for a little more stifness and rigidity. so Reo ain't ur go, unless of coarse they do make boards with stringers in them now.

I reckon anywhere around 42-43's would be fine. Just a couple of things though: Definately a 60/40 rail setup (as opposed to 50/50), and board thickness is obviously something keeping in mind too.

For $150, I'd be looking at picking up something 2nd hand instead of buying a new budget model board. Also, there have been some new & heavily discounted rheo's floating around though since they folded (and just about all the new model boards they released had stringers too: Rheopaipo Site), so keep an eye out for those if you're after a bargain.

Sailfish - You should PM Lidshaper. He makes custom bodyboards and would know what you need for your size. They are quality boards at a cheap price.

hey! i'll just join in on what others are saying. the bat will give you more bouyancy. A 42inch bat has a greater surface area than a 42inch cresent tail. I would be looking at least a 42 inch bat or bigger in a cresent. A 43 would prolly be the go.

Have you got fins and all that stuff? If you need to get yourself totally set up a package like this would be awesome. the nomad in a 43.

email them at bodyboarders. They could tell you what they have in your size in your price range.

good luck!!!!!!
