Its a bit of a difficult one, I feel for both the blokes. I guess rules are rules but out at a place like Pipe, everything must happen so quickly and a mistake can be deadly. I reckon they should be able to call off the interference if both parties agree it was unintentional.

Its also a shame (i think someone pointed this out yesterday) to see so many perfect unridden waves go through because someone has priority. I guess this is one of the turn offs of competition surfing.

That and seeing a Brazilian beat an Aussie.

In fact, I think its a shame to let the bloody Brazilians into Pipe at all.

Can't see too many surfers retracting an interference call if it's in their favour.

But Gilly walks if he reckons he's out, and he's allowed to by the rules of the game

love the cricket analogy... a batsman has the option to walk if he knows hes out, but if the umpire doesnt hear the edge hes not obliged to... its all about whether you play fair or play by the rules... at the moment theres no contingency for a surfer to be "fair" in a competition, it's all very by the rule book with the judging and tactics employed... i'm not terribly au fait with the intricacies of the laws of competition surfing, but the priority and interferance laws seem to take some of the human elements and sportsmanship out of the contest...

There's no priority operating at Pipe this year, it's all four-man heats.

And there are hardly any perfect waves going unridden. The waves you're watching on the webcast my look perfect, but they're often warbled and very difficult or dangerous. It's unwise to judge a nth shore wave with a Sydney eye.

Geez Nick, i coulda sworn some of those waves looked perfect from my computer but, yeah, you are probably right. Having never surfed pipe myself I was sure I woulda been charging into the stray ones

Salty, your story reminds me of a tale I read told by Beau Emerton when he was surfing Backdoor (I think during a waiting period for Pipe). A bomb came through and he was in position. He had the one and only Braden Dias on the inside who told Beau to go it as he was going left. Beau looked, to make sure he was going left (as the last thing you want to do is drop in on Dias especially out at Pipe). Beau paddled, looked again to make sure and dropped into the wave. As Beau made his bottom turn he saw out of the corner of his eye that Braden had, in fact, decided to go right as well.

Beau said he watched in horror as Braden just got smashed.
Not only did Beau drop in on a heavy Pipe local but he now had to contend with the Wolfpak waiting up the beach who had seen it all happen. Obviously to them it just looked like Beau had blatently dropped in.
Beau could already hear the whistles from the beach.
He paddled over to Braden to apologise. Braden said it was not his fault as he was gunna go left but realised he was behind the peak too far so went right instead. Explaining that to the Wolfpak might be a bit tricky though.
Beau went in and saw Luke Egan who was paddling out at the time. Luke said "Hi Beau, how are ya?"
"Hi Loui, I'm about to die actually." said Beau, looking at the locals descending down the sand towards him.

Beau managed to talk his way out of the incident but, as he turned around to paddle out again, the boys said, no you don't Beau, you've had your surf out here today!

Sorry to hijack the thread but i was cacking when i read that story.

When he paddled for a wave he paddled towards me and looked like he was going to go left so he had right of way, then at the last moment he went right. But by then it was too late and I'd let him have the wave... sly bastardos!! Needless to say, he only got away with that move a couple of times. The peak I was on was splitting, so he could've gone left, but the rights were heaps longer and better. Is this a common tactic? I'll be trying it from now on.
and you're the guy who loves calling others a kook ... the more you talk salty, the more you show your true colours ...

He's standing on his board, using it to get some elevation before diving.

He'll probably dive flat -- at Pipe in that situation you wanna stay pretty high and let the whitewater blow you horizontally rather than go deep and et smashed against the reef by turbulence.
