now i got a good one. this mate of mine lives in bali but works for nasa, and on his time-off during trips to mars takes his board and has a sniff around. hasn't found anything up there yet, but he's still very hopeful. this one's from humble old planet earth a couple of years ago.

I bumped into an old surf coach who said he had some photo's from way, way back .... this may not look like much but it's me 26 years ago at Burleigh competing in the Nat School Boys at the un-ripened age of 15 riding a Barry Bennett .......

jeeeeezz-zus Lucky Al ... did you read my comment ! ... "26 years ago" ...

It certainly wasn't me, I was not quite to the level of some of the others, my best effort ever was making it to 'a' final (we won't discuss where I came)

I remember Bryce Ellis being up there that year, who was surfing really well at that time (probably still does) and it may have been him, a young Clarke-Jones fellow who had a picture of the looney tunes Tasmanian Devil on the bottom of his board and destroyed everything in his path but I don't remember him taking out a schoolboys, and I believe Todd Ingam from Freshie, ... they were the front runners from memory back then but I couldn't say .... Ricky East from Freshie and Paul Burnett and Kingsley Looker from Manly were older than me and I remember them being regular finalists back then ....

that's all I have I'm afraid L'Al .... remember that this all happened before the dark ages between 17 and 21 .....

I sh!t you not ... he was born utterly fearless ..... 14 years old out at Forresters Beach lefts at minimum 10' and he was taking off way inside 25 yr old seasoned locals in their prime .... mind blowing watching a barely 5', 14 yr old in full free fall take off on his big wave board that was 5'4", he was sponsored by McCoy at that time before Nirvana ....

I remember abusing crap out of him one day for dragging me out to a shallow reef break at about 8' when we about 15 .... it was dredging and pounding and I was sh!tting myself ... but he had zero fear and was just so enthusiastic ... he paddled straight out ... straight on the inside of everyone and took the first set ....

it's no wonder he ended up doing what he does ...
