So who can recommend a modern 2+1 ?

I used to have a beau young 'door'
http://hookupusurf.com/5-10-beau-young-the-door.html

but at 5'11 or so it was too small for me

I like the look of the one Haydn Lewis does http://haydnlewisdesigns.com/freeRange.html

but never seen one in the flesh.

anyone know any others?

i'm thinking 6'4 - 6'8, modern rails, concave and rocker with wider outline, around 38 litres volume i'd guess...

I don't think I have noticed a single person post here yet who actually likes/rides them as a regular board.

If anyone here does, why did you/would you choose this board over another shortboard?

Interested to hear the reasons, whatever they are...

I reckon that stacks of boards from the seventies and eighties are still very relevant and functional for most surfers, as they tend to have more volume and are more user friendly.

most surfers aren't surfing up to the standard that would ever see them push their modern HPs type boards to anywhere near its capacity anyway.

In spite of all my HK drubbing, I'd still choose one hand over fist WAY before I ever opted for one of those appalling wafer thin banana rockered boards from the early-mid nineties. Fk me those things were junk. Glad I never got sucked into that fad.

I reckon a lot of the gumby punters that have gone out and bought a HK, probably would've been better off with something more along the lines of an 80's thruster type board of a normal reasonable size for an everyday board, than a flat elliptical 70's type board like the HK.

I thought Haydn Lewis was shaping with Channel Islands now.

I knew someone who had one of those free range boards - lovely shape, beak nose, he loved it, but never saw him out in the line up on it. This was about 5 years ago, when Haydn was shaping for Insight

steve, i want it for general all round surf. 2-6ft reefs and beaches. anything but v soft sub 2ft or really junky short shouldered surf. i am no high voltage ripper. i want some flow and trim, and early wave entry. i also like the haydn lewis paddle pop, have eyeballed one, surprisingly refined. but $$$$$

OK I'll put my fcuking hand up here. **puts on hard hat**

I did a bit of a review on another thread somewhere (which crutchman actually endorsed 8) ) but can't find it.

I've had a 5'8 HK for about 8 months now. I bought it as a replacement for an old 5'11 SouthCoast twinny that was way oversized for me - I'm 85kgs and 172cm.

I can ride the HK in waves as small as 1.5 ft up to about 4 foot. But anything 3ft and over I'll go to my custom Sergio Gomez 6'0 rounded square thruster. (best shaper I know - all round decent bloke)

I agree the HK suits the open face. But lets face it, large fatty type waves are what I normally ride down on the surf coast anyway. Ultra light construction does present issues with wave chop but nothing is as much fun as boosting of the close outs and launching skywards.

The HK rides like a retro fish but turns better.

I still don't understand the utter hatred displayed towards them by some posters here. I see hipsters on mals all the time but I don't hate mals.

And really, who gives a fcuk what other people ride? Just enjoy your surf.

I reckon they would go great....whats the retail on one?

Funny how these mid lengths as we call them, or mini-mals which Carroll poured so much scorn over are now deemed by the market to be some of the most valuable boards around......

a ha ha shearer that's not even bait. you might want to try one of those soft wiggly things instead.

High level surfers aren't interested in those type of boards though, and I can see the reason for the scorn from people like nick and yourself Steve. For the average surfer, they paddle well, and make the average waves most of us surf fun, and we can turn them better than a minimal. That wouldn't get most high level surfers excited but again, when you're getting out once a week or fortnight and can't always choose when you surf, you have to make the most of what's there. A lot of the time those type of boards do well in those conditions.

For all the ribbing of people buying boards because of the marketing, I don't really believe that. Sure, some will, but a lot just simply see a board that will suit them and the waves they surf, and don't really put much thought into the image they'll present at the beach with it under their arm.

'midlengths', mini-mals, bonzers, and these 2 + 1s are all very, very different from each other.

It's nothing to do with fashion for me. The opposite - the 'hull' type boards I've seen in hipster surf shops, 7ft plus, single fins with rounded bottoms instead of concave etc - usually v expensive - look very hard to surf to me. Not that I've tried one. I'm interested in mid length 2+1s with modern rails and concave cos big shortboards / fun shapes I've tried just don't feel right to me. Molluscs etc I mean, not sure why, but they don't seem to add up to easier smoother surfing, more limitations than benefits, I think the refined mid length could be the answer...

refined midlengths are sick!
check the sweet rocker and refined rail-line on my 7'6 puppy.
handles steep bowls, overhead waves, barrels, super late take offs, turns beautifully, etc etc.

Have you had a look at the Grant Miller or Mark Richards boards? I'm sure they could refine them up a bit more if you wanted.
