I cant believe this one has gone through to the keeper without comment (especially for Hatchy....)

The Hypto Krypto has been voted 'board of the year' at the Australian Surf Industry Awards.

From the article
“The Hypto Krypto attracts people from all walks of life. It suits such a broad range of surfer from people who are just starting out, to the most elite level. A lot of people describe it as their ‘one board quiver’ for its versatility,” says Hayden.

Anyone want to explain why Hatchy is so vitriolic towards them?

I think he's blocked me because he doesn't answer my questions.

popular board, fashion item very popular with kooks.

not that hard to understand.

Steve have you actually ridden one? I've seen a fair few guys rip on these things but you have to go short. They're designed to be ridden short. Way shorter than your standard shorty.

I have things to say.

I've ridden a 5'4" -- t'was too short -- and 5'8" ... Super fun boards in all kinds of conditions. imo, they love a long point wave where cutbacks and smooth flowing turns are pure joy. They surf like a longboard. Really hard to go top-to-bottom and tricky to get on rail. They go on rail really easily, but coming out they want to bog.

All in all, they are waaaaaay overpriced at $900 for a popout made in thailand. A good friend who owns a surf shop, he can sell me one brand new for $610 and he said he still makes a little on it from cost price. Shows you how much hayden is fleecing people for the 'fad' ...

Durability is a big issue with his ff tech too, imo. One surf on a beachie I caved in all the fcs plugs on the right side surfing my backhand where there's stuff all force going on them.

The shred sled I took to tassie was made in mona as a custom, picked it up on my drive through. It wasn't anymore durable either. Heaps of depressions, and that's surfing in 2mm booties with a tailpad. The fins were in indented in by the time I came back home, and the cracks in the glass were running right up the length of the rails.

My solution to having and wanting a hypto was I went with a local shaper doing something similar in PU. A little kirra stub pintail by Moon. I get the same flow on, it goes in all kinds of conditions and loves the barrel and cost me 5-hunge with glassed on fins.

It's not my everydayer (A standard 5'11" hps is) but I do love it too bits and wouldn't travel anywhere without her.

^^ what shearer said (about mostly ridden by kooks), and how they're meant to be ridden (per braithy "smooth flowing turns") = why you most often see the HK punters not being able to surf them. Proliferation of gumby surfers by the hundreds that could Never manage a smooth flowing turn if their life depended on it. plus, being caught up in the fad and being told/sold on buying one that's going to be WAY too short to be of any use to them whatsoever.

but yes, under the right feet, they look like a functional board. mostly when you get a stylish cruisy older guys carving/arcing on one, or a younger/mid aged surfer that has some style and flow. not these other fking gumbies though. as for them, their HK may as well be just like any other "metro must have".

from what i've experienced from riding a HK (albeit limited), and from what i've seen of them (lots and lots), i'd say their "sweet-spot" would be 2 foot rip-bowls. that's where i've seen them really perform well. yes, they might be able to and can handle broader ranges of conditions and sizes under the right set of feet, but again, 2 foot rip-bowls looks to be 'where they're at'.

yep. under the right feet, they're ok, just like any other board.

they are a fish with the tail end of a thruster, so you ride it like one.

end of story.

oh c'mon Rancho, a fish by definition is a package with straight rails and a deep swallow.

That HK outline is straight off a mid seventies shortboard.

they just added three fins.

yeh but the modern surf world hi-jacked the term 'fish' to describe any board with a wide point forward of middle and flatter rocker.

actually what would be the real term for those boards?

my bonzer

fking shits all over the HK for all round performance and range of use

that bonzer genuinely handles anything from knee high windswells, up to 8 foot groundswells. doesn't matter whether the wave is fat, hollow, peaky, or down-the-line. it handles all. small-mid range stuff, keep the fin more forward. in the 6-8 foot range, move the fin right to the back.

Or any board with a swallow tail = fish (edit: according to the modern surf industry)

To add to the confusion often these boards are also called 'hybrid' boards when they dont have the swallow tail. Hybrid with what is a question, but they are 'sort of shortboard shape' but have 'sort of mid sized board' attributes (rocker, widepoint etc) so I guess it sort of makes sense.

Talking of 70s shapes, what about the MR 'Flying Saucer'. As he says I used an old 70's outline template, married it to a modern low rocker, with even thickness distribution throughout,

I don't consider any board with a swallow tail a fish. true fish are the knee-board derived steve lis style boards

I was using the term incorrectly before to describe the hypto, but there is no real term for wide-point forward flat rockered under 6 foot shortboards

Maybe sales revenue is part of the equation...

Those things are every where.
