so what spots at 6-8ft are you thinking about?

I've got lots of experience surfing over there and I'm curious as to where you'd ride a 6'2" in 6-8ft surf.

Steve IIRC you said yourself that on your last desert trip you rode a 6'0" when you would previously have ridden a 6'6"

I've met you both and you've got 10 kegs and at least 10cm on tonks. He's got much better hair

that's why I'm trying to find out where he plans to use his 6'2'.

if it's for those desert waves then you can ride shorter.

still reckon you need a 6'3" plus.

I rode a 6'9" on the biggest days which were 6ft+.

I should point out that I tend to under call sizes on my scale

To my way of thinking I reckon guys are riding boards way too short when the waves get sizey.

For a WA step-up I'd be looking at least at a 6'9". First things first you need the paddle power to catch the wave. Extra rail length feels damm good too unless your Kelly Slater.

OK, try a few boards out. A good paddling 6'6" or 6'9" and your 6'2".
Ride it at the Ox or some other open ocean type wave and compare and contrast your ability to move around the line-up, be in position for set waves, outpaddle other people and avoid getting caught inside.

After that you might decide a 6'2" is fine or that you need the extra length or even more.

If youre catching waves, having fun and avoiding getting clobbered then the board is working.

Most people would rather die with illusion than face reality.

Once you get over the psychological block of surfing bigger boards (Tonks this is no way a comment or suggestion on your surfing/ability or how you should go about it - purely my own experience and observations of a couple of other people I know) it changes your life for the better.

Lennox point is a spot where a bigger board is very helpful, I'll ride a 5'9 in 4-6 foot snapper/greenmount but sure as shit that same board will be underdone at Lennox.

it's a little odd he handed you a 6'1". I would take something much bigger as a back-up at least.

Frankly if you don't know almost exactly how the board will handle 6-8 foot anywhere, you're leaving yourself open for a real potential horrorshow.

8 foot is near triple overhead by the way

The Ox is a much more open ocean wave than the QLD points.

Alot depends on swell direction there.

If it's E swell and not much current I'll ride a 6'3" or a 6'9" when it's 6-8ft.

If there's S in the swell and it's current and heaps of water I'll ride a 7'0".

Some of those WA reefs are super ledgey and you can't ride a bigger board, others are open ocean and you need heaps of foam.

I'm trying to figure out a Cloudbreak quiver for later in the year......anyone got any suggestions. Keen to ride it up to 10ft. Maybe bigger if it's perfect.

i picked up and had a geez at a board made for ross williams by greg webber this week. similar to the one made for kelly.
looked about 6'4 by 19, super tail rocker with a deep single concave, diamond tail with a single flyer. had a 5 fin option which I don't see the point in frankly.

i think that's what kelly would ride at 10 foot cloudy this year, that's where it would work as a four fin.
