Quiver for Vic Surfcoast

Post by bobjs » Fri May 10, 2013 3:44 pm

Thoughts on appropriate quiver and board features for the Victorian surfcoast region for the average bloke.

I reckon slightly different boards required compared to say the Sydney region due to different style of waves. More mid to longer period swells but often fuller/flatter style of waves. Probably less onshore surfing cause of the cold and not much short-period slop.

Hey Bob -

Just as with anywhere else, your quiver requirements would depend alot on personal preferences as well as your ability to find holes and the cash to fill them...

There's always the one-board crew with an allrounder squashtail, but its pretty standard for a local to have at least a step-up as well.

I'd say groveller, hpsb (if that's your thing...) and step-up for a minimum to cover bases. Past that, if you have the cojones for the biggest days, you might go a 7'+ gun too. Or, for the conoisseur, a host of tasty novel design variations at hand.

There is a ridiculously obvious prevalence of generic Queensland-made hpsb boards down here...or was, before Base folded. The Qld board traditionally had more rocker than a custom Vicco shape. This was sort-of standardised out in hpsb's...up to a point. - There are models with tons of rocker which would fit rounder pocketty waves better, or say, increased tail rocker as a personal preference. And two local shapers will have their characteristic style and differences anyway.

In hpsb's there's not really a distinct "Victorianness", except what a custom shape might have on request. You could be forgiven for thinking the only differences in two 6'1s from opposite ends of the country had no differences past the tissue paper decal.

The area where that rocker distinction is still particularly noteworthy is in guns - A gun for Giant Bells say, with not-hollow big open faces, is generally flatter than a Grajagan special.

Hope that helps...

The only local variable you need to account for is the crowds. The crowds thin when it gets big and cold.

I'd say bring what ever you ride now and spend your quiver money on a top of the line wettie (with hood) and a gun -like a 6'8" round tail quad with plenty of foam under the chest. With that sort of combo if you're fit enough, you can get some pretty epic mid winter waves when its 5ft +

A fish, gun & funboard should cover all bases...did for me...
