i was happy to catch a few heats yesterday and the day before. nathan hedge's surfing was something to see, although his bottom turns struck me as somehow effeminate. but off the top, that's where it was happening: ka-pow!!! ka-pow! ka-pow! ka-pow! mitch coleborn, there's another goofy ripper. john-john of course went off, and heath joske, and jordy and aritz aranburu. but as has been mentioned there was definitely a lot of flapping going on. i wonder why so few of these guys have decent styles. i mean styles that make you want to watch them, because of course they must all have functional styles. you'd think in this day of digital video and the internet more of them would be able to develop attractive styles. or maybe digital video and the internet mess with surfers' individualities and personal freedoms. maybe you need less exposure to everything that's out there to be more yourself. or maybe it's much simpler than that and we can just blame kelly slater for this mess. or the carbon tax. i don't know, come to think of it i don't even care. suck on that fong.

ooh i just checked and it's finals day live now. unfortunately a bunch of nobodies has made it into the quarterfinals. wonder what happened there. and the surf seems to have dropped to about two and a half feet. bloody hell. guess i'll go for mitch coleborn, or the local fella who just knocked out john-john. ah who gives a shit. competitive surfing is dead! let's hope it rises from the dead for the next contest.
