That was kinda my initial thoughts on it also. It detracts from what I understand and admire about single fin surfing.

Perhaps there's something in it though from a more modern/ performance perspective ? The stability and hold/delay off the bottom of a deep single fin ? A delayed coiling/compress then launch type thing happening ?

you'll get the delay but not the projection...thats what multi-fins are for.

the joy of the single fin is embracing the undiluted high-line.

Looks more like Merrick was trying to channel McCoy trying to "channel" the late great AB. Sorry but that thing is ugly.

Agreed.

Those single fin planshapes were around about 1980 to 81, but eclipsed by the thruster, they go well but 5'8" is too short for my taste.

Its actually designed by Tom Curren using planshapes and rocker from the Black Beauty, which was originally designed by Maurice Cole I believe, around 87/88. I usually surf 6'1", but at that length it has 38ltrs, a bit much for my 69kg. I also have 10 surfboards of various guises, I saw this in a local shop and new it would fit in nicely with the current quiver.

It looks black beauty-esque. Love the vee bottom.
Be keen to hear how it goes.
What conditions did you get it for?
At 5"10 it Looks like it's built for clean fast walls up to head and a half high.

I'm thinking shoulder to head high fast beachies, certainly not the local soft wave that I usually surf the MSF or mal on. It'll be a few weeks before I get it out of lay-by, I'll post pics of the actuall board then.
