...and you'll all be delighted to know I've got one of Roy's 3D printed fins, I'll give it a whirl and report back in a couple weeks
Re: Single Fins
Interesting, I've been printing various fins on my printer but there are many variables that I havn't got one that's surfable.

Ok, so didn't manage to get any footage, as after less than 2 mins on the beach, the wife said 'it's freezing, you're crazy, I’m sleeping in the car!' Fair enough. But I managed to get a decent first test run and some pics anyway.
Waves were gently manicured peelers, running from chest to shoulder high further down the beach, and up the beach, mostly waist high and breaking closer in but machined perfect across the tapered bank.
Previous day (not pictured) 20 mins and a couple of beaches further north was breaking shoulder to almost head-high. Peaky cross/offshore, a bit wind affected, but more of a sloping peak with a nice end section to cutback on before the channel near the headland.
The board went well and felt good for its first run. No top-to-bottom surfing as you’d expect, being the board that it is. It held a nice line, not lightening quick, but certainly not slow either, as it kept up well with speed of the wave, made the sections easily enough. Overall, it did what it was required of it. User friendly board, predictable, and nothing ‘new’ to get your head around.
The peakier/shouldering waves of the previous day were the highlight. Highline take-off, a series of trims, finishing up with a cutback then flattening out to the channel. The cutbacks felt great, as they always do with a pulled in pintail like that.

Re: Single Fins
c'mon mate, who are you trying to kid. riding seventies single fins in small beachbreak is boring as batshitt.
I want Nightclub Dwight dead in his grave I want the nice-nice up in blazes
Re: Single Fins
You don't get behind the wheels of an old HK Holden expecting it to go like a late model skyline. But you can still enjoy it for what it is all the same.
And yes, I'm sure that the board will be bit more thrilling in something considerably bigger and more solid. Small beachies aren't exactly an adrenalin rush in any case.
As for "batshit boring" and "who am I trying to kid". None of it was boring. It's never boring, because I just "like surfing" Steve.
I love in fact. Do you ?

fk i love rounded pintail vee bottoms. they go like a knife thru butter, with that 'on point' calligraphy pen type feel. aaaaaaggggggghhhhh
Re: Single Fins
It has an interesting bottom shape, double concave v feeds into the channels with a chined rail all the way to the nose. Bring on some clean 2'-3' beachies!

Re: Diverse board, "an alternative to a mini mal" kind of spoils it.
Re: Single Fins
looking forward to thursday to give it a proper run. 5ft ESE swell at 12+ seconds on the cards. should be sufficient to get a certain fickle reef working. it's a spot i've been eyeing off for a while. it's mostly an open bowl and a sharp sloping shoulder that kinda spoons back into itself as the waves carries inside the point for about 50 to 80 metres. i couldn't care less about turning either. just want an early entry in, set a steady line at the base, and sit back in the throat of it. fingers crossed it's on..

One of Freshiedude's (Realsurf handle) boards.Matticus Finch wrote:I'll take a 6'6".
Didn't like the photo you originally posted but I like those.
Saw and was tempted by a 6'10" diverse on ebay yesterday but fortunately don't like the nose. (since I can't afford it)
If I lived down there we'd have each other on speed dial for board swaps because we have the same tastes in boards in the same dimensions.

Re: Single Fins
What is the "knack" to surfing a single fin shortboard?
I've spent most of my time rising thrusters (beginning), quads and twins (last 5-6 years). I've never been able to get a single fin to "go" for me.
Whats the style or secret?
I gather you can't pump speed into it as easily as a thruster for example...?

yeah you can but you need to have a better rhythm. you can't just tic tac away like mad skateboard style as everybody does on thrusters
