Have you tried googling how to pull off a pigdog ...

No that would require a large studded collar ... an owner with a mullet and an animal with a penchant for eating young children.

But if its surfing low and tight on your backhand ... one thing to be aware of is to not let your outside arm (the one holding the outside rail) to dominate the stance. If you do hold on to tight it creates a tendency to oversteering your board ... upwards ever upwards ... resulting in to high a line ... and the inevitable wipeout ... believe me I know ...
The moving finger writes and having writ moves on ... now all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel even half a line ... nor all thy tears wash out a single word of it.

Open your shoulders so that your chest is almost facing the nose. It'll mean that your weight is further forward, your hand is further forward on the rail and mean that you keep the drive that you can otherwise lose by pulling up too hard on the outside rail.

Don't lean forward.
You just want to set your weight clean over the back two thirds of the board and relax into it like you would in a frontside barrel. Lean fwd in a pigdog and you'll achieve the opposite.

Grabbing the rail automatically squares your shoulders.

You'll bloody waste a lot of waves at first but whatever.

I'm hardly likely to argue technical aspects of surfing with Nick, but just to clarify I didn't mean to get so much weight forward that you unweight the back part of the board.
My natural tendency, and one I see a lot, is to be too heavy on the back foot in steep pigdog takeoffs, attempt to pull up too hard on the rail, and almost force an unintentional stall down the face or take too high a line.

Go to dapto leagues club on a friday night. Drink yourself silly. Wait outside at closing. You'll find a pigdog there. Telling your mates is optional.

Have your front foot turned forward a bit. One way to guarantee a horrible style and turn a pigdog into a poo man is to not have your front foot pointing forward enough.

Also, when you're practising, never jump off. Even on closeouts, try to ride as long as you can in the barrel until it caves in.

Gotta say that pigdogging is my nemesis....

I've had a few knee ops on my back leg and it always feels so vulnerable.

Any tips on 'protecting' your back leg in pigdogs?

My pigdogging is rubbish. I'm kind of like 3, but with my shoulders too squared off.

Re the turf toe:
I had a bad turf toe injury over a decade ago, avulsion fracture on the outside of the big toe. I couldn't surf at all for a few years, as it would re-tear every session and then I couldn't walk for days.

Try wearing a reef boot on your back foot only. It'll grab, and tell you when you're dragging it. After about 2 months I'd corrected something so it didn't hurt anymore and now I don't have to wear it.

There's a couple of other anomalies...

Neal P's weird 'over the edge' with the back knee/whole back leg method and Jamie O'Bs parallel stance thing. Both advancements on basic methods I guess..

A friend of mine swears by grabbing the rail just in front of the back foot - really far back. Doesn't work for me (yet) but could work for others?
