After that swing over my way Fong, we'll go for a surf in Westernport Bay when a storm is howling and the swell is around 2 - 3 metres (which means it'll be about 4 -6 on the Bass Strait beaches)

The crowds just do my head in. It's not just other surfers, it's the hoards, the cars, the lack of parking etc.

If it ain't a dawn session it really is hard to justify.

I've given up surfing on the weekends in Sydney for the same reason. Fortunately I have a flexible job, and it'll be even more so come next year.
If i go to the beach on the weekend, I walk, and make sandcastles with my kids. Far, far more enjoyable than surfing at a crowded beachbreak where half the muppets are going right on lefts.

Most all of my surfing is the early session before work. I rarely bother even looking at it on the weekends.

damn straight..
the solution is to treat any new 'summer' faces in the line up with nothing but contempt..
not necessarily by dropping in, but more so by employing a similar tactic as the seagull that puffs up its chest and storms straight in to get the chip..
this will ensure your wave count during summer is on par with what it is during winter..

Must admit I never employ the "seagull" tactic, I simply just drop in on them

Pretty easy to spot them, by the time they paddle out they're puffing harder than a steam train, either that or they fall off almost every time. Watching them flounder in the rips at places like Gunnamatta is always an amusing past-time too!

surfed with kylie the other weekend, on a peak that had no less than 50 people on it, with 4-5 people taking off on the same wave, and she commented that every time she turned around i was picking off a set and riding it all the way to the beach.

Summer on the east coast is mainly 2ft wind affected bluebottle infested close period slop anyway. I find it hard to take anyone who wants to fight over it seriously.
Went out on the weekend at sparrows fart and shared a little peak with a few guys until the wind got into it. Wouldn't have bothered if there had been more in the water.
Heading to the South Island NZ over summer where the waters still cold and there are still a few uncrowded places.
