I'm interested to hear who else here is riding a similar thruster at the moment. A shorter, wider, flatter rockered, but wider tailed thruster (e.g. Dumpster Diver, White Diamond, Lost Rocket, Pridmore DD).

I kind of like the theory behind having a wider squarer tail and more tail area for the rear fin to control, making for lots of release and glide through turns.

Ive been riding a JS Blak Box now since March after clean snapping my Lost Rocket....
to be honest i thought the rocket was a dog of a thing, i dont know if it was just my board, the dims or what but i just never felt right!
on the other hand the JS rides pretty fun in small waves 1-4ft i am 6'1 and 84kg so im not tiny, my standard shorty is a 6.3, 18 1/2, 2 5/16 and im riding a 5'10 x 19 3/4 x 2 3/8 blak box....the length took a bit of time to get used to, but once i got it dialed i had it turning on a dime and throwing the fins out in no time....sometimes on late take offs i can get caught short (literally) and nose dive so sometimes i have to nurse a sucky steep take off a little, but the planning speed and manoeuvrability is outrageous

I just got my hands on a 5'11 x 18 5/8 x 2 1/4 Proton Low or "Pro-Low".

Apparently this will be one of channel islands new models next year.

The board had quiet full rails and low rocker. I have only surfed it twice but it felt amazing.

Great speed with the low nose rocker, felt as though you can get good projection out of turns and it was extremely forgiving. Im frothing on this as a step up from my Dumster Diver inspired model! yew

Mark, read with interest the outcome of this DD of yours.
I like what I see and understand from Steve's enthusiasm about it's possibilities.

I'm curious how the dims on the one above (for a 77k rider) would vary if you were making it for someone considerably lighter. Say 10+ k lighter?

depends on his height, his current shorty that he likes, style of surfing, waves ridden, how well he likes them to paddle etc etc....

there's more to it then just reducing the overall volume..... 8)

 thanks Mark...knew it'd be a bit more complicated..

My current shorty's a 6'2 x 19 3/4 x 2 3/8 Psillakis Hipster.
It's brief and price off the rack seemed to suit my needs and circumstances several months ago when i finally upgraded after the same board for .. ...years.
It has its good and bad days.
hmf..like life itself.
I'll go into more detail down the line when i'm in a position to do so.

I've taken a keen interest in following the many board design threads, and learning a lot in the process AND rethinking what i could be riding as opposed to what i am...and as well because the other day i took out a neighbours board i'd finished repairing (he offered me to) - a 6' maybe 20+ wide, hardly any rocker at all, swallow tail, quad, fish by Dick Van St.. and although it felt novel and forced me to ride it differently, still felt bulky, with a heavy glass job i suspect, and felt like just a hunk of timber. but in saying so, i found myself riding (1-2ft full to sucky reform rip bowl) as i imagine i'd ride a mal. lots of trim time, had to plant the back foot down hard to cut back, and tended to go to the nose for speed...
Anyway, i say all this cause it was a novelty for me as i've not had the opp to try anything different for quite a few years.
And the DD's brief seemed appealing, and i liked the flatter profile?...i feel the hipster's got a bit too much tail rocker...kind of makes it 'skatey' a bit.

In the meantime, i'll continue to follow the design talk with interest.
Damn, it'd be good to have a similar board testing day down here some time.
I'll just have to come up there i guess one day.

yeah, good to learn lots about boards, I always read and listen to others..and ride lots of boards mate, you can not beat learning thru feelings I reckon...same as girls I guess haha...the DD is fun and still lots of perf but an easy more stable high perf board that paddles well, better suited to the average Joe or a ripper wanting something a bit more fun on gutless waves....
Its a design I havent been doing too many of but all of a sudden there's a buzz about them, and people are ordering them recently...weird and I dont know why but maybe they are looking for a Dumpster Diver style board but for alot less cash....anyway, be good if ya made it up to a BTD, might do one in winter this year too.... 8)

what a you makingthats fresh and totally new moondog ? what hasnt been done before ? Dont think anyone is saying this has not been done, its just a blend of designs to try to make a fun board....he said in the title, that its a a rip off from what Dane has been riding.....so what is your point here ? Are you saying that Dane is ripping off McCoy or ??? :?: every shaper can be accused of ripping someone off or can nobody shape anything similar to anything else that has been done before by another ???
