The title race
so with throwaways taken into account, slater is third behind taj. taj will carry atleast a 9 into his final score, while kelly will take a 5 meaning they are inseparable at the moment. however if taj does badly in any event from here, he has next to no chance.
fanning is in a more commanding position currently throwing out a 3 and a 17 which means he's got room to bomb out of one more event and have an still excellent end of year position.
this will become more interesting as the year goes on. awaiting grazza's rundown ....
alby, mick has been spending heaps of time over there in the last 2 years, and everyone who's surfed the place knows experience counts in the shifty peaks of pipe/bd. kelly and andy have more of it though.
and yeah, i'd like to see mick win this year, or even taj (unlikely now) but kelly's form is top notch.

Kelly will win it, then he will go on to win next year to give him 10 titles. Then he will retire and live happily ever after. I think its better for surfing if mick wins because people get bored with the same person leads for too long but personally I want slater to win, I think he's got more to offer than fanning.
But good point, why is slater still competiting? He must love the whole competitive thing, buts thats gotta be a hard way to live especially when you've been doing it as long as he has (probably why he's lost all his hair). He would have a huge wad of cash and surely he must see there's more too life than competiting. Would be interesting to know what his inspiration is? Maybe its cementing a legacy (already done), or maybe he just can stop him self and is too competitive, or maybe he justs likes that feeling of being stressed and pushed to the edge. I think he would have retired a few years ago but then he got a taste for it again with his 7th title, then he may have retired again at the start of his 8th title year but then he just kept winning everything.
One things for sure, he's a freak of nature, in my opinon the best surfer ever and the best there will ever be. I rate Mick and Taj heaps as well, probably my next 2 favourtite surfers with parko chucked somewhere in there as well.

now i'm as tired of the dominance as anyone, but...
i was totally blown away by kelly's form in his heat against knox. 4 high scores: and 3 of them were surfed without hesitation, full bore from start to finish. each wave had a highly critical move or 2 and every single move was connected to the proceeding. the last 8.5 was average and overscored imo.
taylor who is as good as anyone else on tour could only match the ferocity on one wave, on which he scored a 10. he surfed it flawlessly, but i think he was overscored as it was as good but no better than any one of kelly's 3 waves. unfortunately he couldn't back it up, and kelly won comfortably. taylors 5 was underscored and should have been a 7 which still wouldn't have helped.
considering the waves, it would have taken a miracle for anyone to match kelly in that heat. i don't think mick or taj could have pulled it off. ai at his peak maybe.
that was up there with the best surfing i've ever seen in an event. taylor is surfing like tom curren at his peak but at the speed of the modern professional (hence less flow/grace), and kelly is surfing like a machine.

so ... ai and kelly out'a france means that we are down to a 4 horse (well 3 if you listened to tc last night, likening eugene to a whippet) race, if there are no injuries which are, if you believe me
mick, kelly, taj and parko
p.s count eggs hatch me never ... :?
