What's the biggest wave you've ridden?

Post by Slowman » Fri Jul 06, 2007 2:34 pm

I reckon about the biggest I've ever ridden was 10-12' years ago out at the wall. Surfed Cronulla Point plenty of times 8-10' and Voodoo at a heaving 10'. All on boards about 6'2" or smaller. I've ridden Shark Island at about 6-7' and while that was scary and fantastic I don't want to be anywhere near a place like that at 10'.

Frankly I don't think I have the guts anymore to go out in anything bigger than 8' and I ride a 6'5". Maybe it is just Sydney, there aren't too many places that can handle big swells. Still I'm interested to hear how big others have ridden and what they reckon their max would be.

Attempted take off on a heaving windy 10ft plus wave Margaret River (the left) on a 5' 9'' McCoy LazerZap in the mid eighties.

Result was not pretty.

Slowman, similar thoughts to yourself at my age

Largest ridden wave, as in rode it like it should have, 6ft no bigger

Largest wave caught, 8ft+ maybe, but went straight as a die didn't even try
and turn.

There are far more accomplished surfers here, and I know my limitations 8)

Largest wave that I've been farked over by  probably 10-12ft when
caught by a sneeker cleanup set. Definately wasn't my most cheerished
memory of THAT morning :P

I know quite a few on these forums have actually caught some monsters,
would love to here their limits 8)
There is the odd one or two around, that I honestly believe have "no limit" other
than the accessability to get to the waves 8) 8) 8)

Butts getting cleaned up is one of my more cheerished memories... Keeps ya feeling alive.

Going out in big surf, phycing up then have a clean session without a single major wipeout i consider pretty lame, doesnt keep you on your toes, makes you wonder 'couldve i gone just a lil bit deeper' or 'i shouldve headed over there where it was bigger and messyer'.

As for size i would have a clue, my mates seem to like shutting me down whenever i think i get a big one, i pull into one im thinking 10-12 ft, and they say 8-10ft  bastards.

I would prob say sometime in the past swell, dunno thats the most remembered. I suck at measuring so going by my theory of 1/2 face size id say i got some 10 ft ones. Been cleaned up by bigger for sure.

Dont really like that stuff, not enough fun, prefer stuff liek today than to that, clean offshore 4ft. Lots more fun, keeps the fun levels up more.

Triple overhead, but that was almost 16 years ago.

These days my max would be a couple of feet overhead tops, and that would be assuming I'm fit which I'm not at the moment due to a nagging shoulder injury. Heck, I haven't even been wet for almost three months.

Suffering major withdrawal symptoms. :x

Ulus at 10 feet. Started out at about 6 foot then some bigger sets and it just picked up. That was 20 years ago . Now I dont really get out in much over 6 foot. Thats plenty for me.

Nick how big wouldve that been?

We all know there's hawaiin feet nd real feet so just say with the trusty meathod of 1/2 X face. How big you think?

Cop any on the head? Pull into the shorey :P
Is there a way around the shorey to get in at Waimea? Like down south corner or something? Heard a story about hawaii local (old guy first to surf kings reef cant remember name) snapping his leg and your brother being one of the few to help him out and get air lifted cause he didnt wanna go through the shorey.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

What about the Tigers and Bulls?

Noahs just bite you and leave you to die then eat you.
Tigers and Bulls go straight for the kill.

8-10ft Ridden. Just about died that day, won't be doing it again.

Please bore us with it salty.

Biggest wave I've ridden well: 4ft.

Biggest wave I've ridden: 5ft.

Biggest wave that's ridden me: 8ft.

I'm with salty on the deep channel thing. I'm comfortable in bigger waves if there's an exit.

And the least scary place to be when a bomb comes through is actually riding the bomb, I think.
