I've heard that in their great wisdom the local government extended the break wall in town and it screwed up the sand flow and Puerto is an even worse close out than it was before.
It can be the best or the worst wave of your life-usual equation=10 waves=8 screaming close outs and=2 of the most epic barrels you'll ever get.
Trouble is it turns onshore around 10am and then stays that way until the arvo glass off/thunderstorm.
Waves can be ULTRA crowded and there's plenty of gnarly looking locals who rip.
On land it can be ultra sketchy and seedy and kinda' dangerous or it can be supper chilled epic latino fun times. Depends where yuo go who you bump inot and if you've snaked any of those aforementioned local.
Can be a great trip-but there's other much better waves much closer to home.

Most definitely a heavy wave.
I've seen guys vomiting in the water after a pounding and boards literally broken into little pieces, and my girlfriend (wife now) broke her collar bone just duckdiving there-and that's heavy, being out the back at Puerto havng to get in through it with a badly busted collar bone and then having to deal with poor medical help in that part of the world and then having to bail back to the US for some 1st world care and out of this world medical costs.....

dunnno what ya all on about
escondido is wicked. coronas, caprinhas and scrabble at night, tubed in boardies all day.got some of the best waves of my life but, yes, i did woos it and not paddle out some days. way gnarly. when its big the life guards sit in the tower and flash mirrors morse code style and blow horns. not a place to get caught inside. better to sit in the jap restaurant in a hammmock, munch sashimi and just watch.
there are lotsa other waves around there too. la ticla, rancheros, barra de la nexpa.....no secrets there, look em up. hire a car and drive.
it's a good trip just dont get the night buses. met someone who spent a while with a gun to their head whilst their bus was robbed.
stick to the coast and you will stay out of trouble. careful of crocs in the river mouths in the wet season. water gets real muddy at some places.
i'd give me left nut at the moment to go back right now and be chowing mexican guacamole after a session at puerto.
munch munch

I agree Puerto is unbelievable. We tend to not venture over to the americas as much as we should on surf missions. I went there for 2 weeks, but ended up moving into a house there and staying for months it was so good. Super barrels, even if you don't make it out of 'em. What's And when the concussion starts to get to you after getting smashed in barrels every morning, you venture to some of the other waves up and down the coast there.... epic.
You also can't beat the family size 1 litre coronas...
