Sounds good Trev. I experienced 90% loss in one ear due to surfers ear before getting it operated on so I know how debilitating it can be. Probably need to get my hearing checked again as it’s been a long time since the Op.

How do you know if it’s surfers ear or general hearing loss causing the issues?

Are you asking me or beans?
I don't have surfers ear.
Just a lifetime of working with noise.
Compressed air in injection moulding factories then more of the same in tyre services. And driving rally cars al night before helmets.
And hereditary issues from both sides of the family.

Hey Trevor, my wife's an audiologist. That Bluetooth partnermike is a good thing. What brand of aids are you using , she asks.

Ok, ok you’re deaf. Got it.

Do you have tinnitus? I have a bit and recently discovered a handy exercise to get rid of it at night (cupping the ears and tapping on the base of your skull at the same time)

Yeah I've got tinnitus.
If you're cupping your ears, how do you have a hand free to tap your skull? 🤪

It's loud enough in both ears that I can still hear it over road and wind noise at 110kph on the highway.

Main way to tell is if you have 90% of your ear canal blocked by exostosis and if it goes away after you have the operation.
Mate who’s a drummer has hearing aids. Trevs condition is very prevalent with Tradies. Older ones in particular who didn’t wear ear protection.

Nice one trev.
I've got bad tinnitus too. I get my hearing checked every year (since I had my ear drilled) and I keep coming up as having good hearing. I mention the ringing and how it makes it hard to follow conversations and they just shrug their shoulders and say there's nothing that can be done.

So I assume I'm heading for some kind of hearing aids in the not too distant future. I'm not sure if there's tinnitus specific aids?

Good to hear (😄) the technology keeps improving.

They're right. Nothing can be done for tinnitus.
But good hearing aids help keep it in the background because you can hear all the normal sounds around you.
With poor hearing the tinnitus becomes more noticeable.

For example I'm in a shopping centre right now and would normally hear the tinnitus.
But ATM I can hardly hear it

Tinnitus and hearing loss seem to have been linked to dementia now. That scares me somewhat

It's more to do with the fact that people with hearing loss tend to hold themselves at arm's length from involvement in things which stagnates their mental capacity.
Keep involved and you are no more at risk than anyone else.

That's my interpretation of the hype anyway.

Yeah I thought that was the case, but I think I read that it's also to do with neurological pathways being messed up?
