Yeah, keep your back straight, feet parralel, knees slightly bent and go easy at first. Lotta momentum there once it's swinging.

I goof around with one occasionally. They reckon if you do the lying flat on your back to standing with the kettle bell above your head it exercises just about all your muscles. Easy to Fcuk it up though.

Is that without hands or arms touching the floor?

I think you can use your opposite arm. The main thing is not to lean to the side. I'm definitely no expert. I did find lifting from under your arm straight up to over your head quite a good counterbalance to paddling stiffness.

Dunno, my kettle has a whistle ... why the fuck you'd want a bell is beyond me.

Turkish get-ups.
Next on the list. I'm going to train for strength with kettlebells through the surf season then go to a deadlift protocol in spring, quit surfing and put on 20lbs of muscle.

Why?
Not the scenario above, just a general question about why you are doing weights.

it's cheap, it's fun, it's DIY.

Injury prevention through strength. Better surfing through strength (power to weight), especially the posterior chain. Desire to escape spring/summer frustrations.
Increase biochemical/hormonal/neural adaptations.

20lbs of muscle over spring, lol. Maybe a year, and half will be fat. But weights are surely good for your surfing, particularly lower body stuff. Focus on explosive movements Steve, not high weight numbers if that makes sense. Strength doesn't always equal size, and power would be better for surfing, not outright strength.

Hunt for a single heavy dumbell on gumtree etc. 20-30kg, and do single arm snatches. Good explosive movement that involves just about all your muscles, particularly posterior chain. Don't try it with the kettlebell or your wrists might get hurt.

Deadlifts and squats are awesome. I love them, my numbers are pretty average but I do them whether I really need to or not.

I'm looking for a secondhand 12 and 16 kg kettlebell. I've seen someone do a kettlebell workout and it was impressive - there was a focus on maintaining form, and flow - definitely a functional movement.

What size KB are you starting with Steve ? How do you find it?

I just started with 15kilos. Home made using plumbing pipe.
Harder than I thought.....but you can see how insanely strong you will get from doing it.

To tell the truth eggs are one thing I avoid buying when I’m grocery shopping. So you may say I’m an intermittent egg buyer who usually lets someone else buy them.

i made some up using old soccer balls, cut a slice and filled with wet sand and sealed with gaff and tied up with rope and hand width lengths of hose for handles.
similarly i used those large protein powder cannisters, filled em up with galve chain and sand. and used rope and hose for handles.
average about 15-20 kg.
an old skateboard deck and a small boat fender makes for a neat balance board too.

defs agree with the need for weights use as we get older shep.

getting into a routine using them regularly is another matter.
