My brother is an ortho registrar. I flicked him your post and he said 'get the fcuk to a doctor'

Lack of swelling is a good sign that its not an ACL. But it could be MCL or meniscus. RICE it and doctor it (or physio).

The blokey thing is why men die younger...

Hope it gets better mate. Dont be tempted to surf on it til it really feels strong enough. A few weeks extra out of the water is better than months out.

I surfed the other week 7 weeks after knee surgery. Knee was going great in rehab, felt strong as. Ended up straining a muscle behind the knee ( popliteus ), so will probably have to wait 6-8 more before I try again.

Torn medial ligament kept me out of the water for 4 months. Had an MRI, but the surgeon said it'd come good without surgery. It has, but at 50 (when it happened 2 yrs ago) 4 months set my surfing back a bit. Was probably near on 6 months before I had the strength/confidence/flexibility to really go for it

Hope it's as good as it possibly can be (you too, beery)

I had a grade 2 MCL sprain two years ago. It's a shit injury. Three months out of the water. Lots of physio. Ended up with scar tissue. Still painful in some movements two years later.

As Beery said, DO NOT do any surfing until it feels strong. I re-injured it going too early. Don't mess with your knees.

Did my medial when I was 20 or so...didn't rehab it properly and kept giving me problems for 4 or 5 years until I got serious about fixing it. Let the injury heal, don't rush it and follow the rehab plan.

I'm still checking the forecasts. Nothing compelling for a week.

I actually rode to the cheaper train station and back today, about 2km each way. It was much easier than walking is. Walking it twinges each step and I have to take stairs one at a time keeping that leg straight. Stairs suck and I feel like a gimp. If I'd walked to the more expensive train that would have been about 400m. Still had to walk the CBD and from office to doc and back but I'm majorly hobbling.

I also did a fair bit of full squatting while servicing the air filter on my compressor drier system after work. That was ok but again it's the middle part while going through ROM that isn't functioning right now. 1000mg of dullness is helping though.
I predict a full recovery in a couple of weeks, but also that each subsequent winter now will give you an ache to remind you that something happened.
It's heartening to see the word gimp used in the correct context.

Nothing like being a retired Chiropractor, and having to apply your own treatment to yourself.
Take that, and that, and that!
14 weeks out with medial co-lateral ligament small tear, = the usual and expected damage to the medial meniscus ( cartilage)
So what is a self chiro treatment.
First step, realising that I had gone an exceedingly long time without my orthotics and I had developed a severe foot pronation on the same leg , rotating and stresing the knee at the very injury. ( so Check your foot and ankle alignments)
Buy Mongrel boots with high ankle supports install orthotics ( felt better almost immediately ) gait no longer looks like a drake waddling around oversize gonads.
Begin theraband and weight work for the knees doing both, light weights and judged minimal repetitions , gradually increasing weight and number over the 14 weeks.
The full range of muscle around the knee joint was balanced and tonicity was balance in each group to make joint increasingly more stable.
Non ballastic stretching to increase the functional range of each muscle group.
lots of walking in waist deep water ( no surfing ) stair walking with the orthotics in boots and a bathroom renovation in middle as well.

First surf at 15 weeks very shaky, after 6 waves knee felt dangerous and risky as I tired ( match fitness obviously much diminished)
18 weeks now able to surf every couple of days , still some lack of trust, in getting to my feet as that is when the knee broke down before.
Coming off the top and bottoms turns OK but quite less than before in skill and ability.
some fear of committing in steeper take offs. About the knee that is.
Cold water and winter also makes me feel less flexible
The program continues, being 66 doesn't give encouragement either.
Working out how to mount a Zimmer frame on board.
Jaffa, I'm opinionated, and I'm sometimes right. So?

Lucky bugger, I'm still getting around strained muscles around my knee. One group of muscles came good, only for a different set to get tight enough to complain. FFS haha

Yeah, no 1 cause of long term problems is doing too much too soon. If you are still NSAIDing things, then keep it low key. No jerking

That's not a knee injury, that's what I'm aiming to be able to do after my fitness program.
