Arthritis - Big Toe

Post by Natho » Wed Feb 05, 2014 12:36 pm

I have had continual pain in my big toe joint for at least the past 2 years. I decided to get it x rayed just to check what was going on. It has come back as some of the worst arthritis the Dr has seen in someone my age. Most probably casued by trauma to the joint. The Dr has put it down to years of surfing and the pressure applied to the joint when turning a surfboard on my forehand. I have a referal to a top foot surgeon however I really want to leave it and only look at surgey as a last option should it get worse.

Anyone else goy a similar problem?

I had an avulsion fracture - turf toe- it hurt for about 8 years.
I got some steroid injections, hurt but didn't do much.
Gradually the pain went away, took about 8 years to be pain free.
The ligament never reattached, so I can't play touch footy any more. I could get the toe fixed straight, but why bother?

Natho I've got the exact same thing. I self diagnosed myself with gout years ago based on friends experiences. Wrong diagnoses, I really should stop doing that.
I just put up with it, comes and goes.

I have something similar. Always thought it was from the pressure applied when turning.
Recently I talked to a podiatrist who got scans. Turns out I have a neuroma (Morton's Neuroma) which is normally between the second and third toes. In my case it's a more rare occurence on the outside of the big toe. I suspect my lifelong habit of driving barefoot and braking with just my big toe has contributed to it, combined with the pressure applied in forehand turns surfing.

I crushed my left big toe between a tree and the footpeg on my trail bike back in the early 70's (desert boots aren't very good protection :( ). Never had any issues apart from the initial pain - for about 12 months. I guess I'm passed the arthritis danger now though.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Had a toe issue last winter. In booties, the big toe on my right (front) foot would not extend far enough as I was getting to my feet so I'd stand on it with it tucked under. Hurt like fcuk which would last several days if I didn't surf. Was dreading the warmer water because there'd be no booty rubber to cushion the blow. Never happened. Now I'm dreading winter because it may well have been caused by the booty

On arthritis, I have osteoarthritis in my right wrist after breaking it about 30 yrs ago. Treated it like shit whilst in plaster and now I'm paying a dear price. More than once it has caused me to facebutt the deck of my board after collapsing whilst getting to my feet. That would be bad enough, but the following working is also quite fcuked

Getting older has it's upside, but I think I'd rather know much more and be much younger

Well how about this type; Osteoarthritis. I have it in my right wrist after breaking it 30 yrs ago. It's a cnut, but life goes on

I'm just home from seeing the surgeon about my troublesome shoulder. I injured it years ago. It came good, but was aggravated 5 years back and has given pain and mobility issues since

Finally bit the bullet and got a referral. MRI last week. Expecting...... Well I don't really know what I was expecting due to the range of possibilities. Whatever it was, I thought it treatable, but it's not
Not really, anyway. Osteoarthritis in my fcuken shoulder. 1st thing the surgeon said was that he'd never seen such an advanced incidence in someone so young (I'm 50)

Available treatments;

1 Steroid injection
2 Cleanout
3 Shoulder replacement

He advises keeping all the powder dry for as long as possible and stick to stretching and pain management via anti-inflammatory and pain medication

1 and 2 are short term. 3 has a life expectancy of just 7 yrs. It's not the sort of surgery that will enable swinging a hammer. Guess I should be happy it's not the hammering shoulder, although my wrist interjects to counter this gratefulness

He also advises to continue daily stretching and reducing the activities that cause it most pain. That happens to be surfing. I'm slightly crushed right now. The future's not looking quite as bright as it was a couple of hours ago

Sorry for having a whinge. Heaps of poor cnuts out there are a lot worse off

Fong I really can't answer your question until I see a specialist because my GP seems to know fk all. Like most GPs. They are just hopeless.

I do have strong history in my family however my GP for some reason seems to think mine is trauma related. Not sure how she drew that conclusion when she seems to know fk all about it.

Like the GP who missed the skin cancer on my foot 3 weeks ago. I just had it cut out. It was only my own persistence and knowing my own body better than a lazy GP that my skin cancer ( the very start of one) was discovered.

I have little faith in GPs as you can tell.

The best description the GP gave following my toe X-Ray was that it 'was a mess'.

I have been referred to Dr Les Grujic. Any good? He specialises in foot surgery.

I wouldn't. I've been gathering as much info as I can. My response to fongle on this one is pretty much fcuk off

In case it's not obvious, I'm still a bit pissed off about my prognosis
