I was unable to surf for almost 1 year after shoulder surgery but when you are ready swimming is the best exercise. Full rotation of the arm with swimmimg action & breathing technique is the way to go

Also a bit of a Catch 22 if you start moving up in board sizes for floatation, as the heavier wider boards take their physical toll with duck diving, turning strains, and paddling deep and harder to get the momentum for faster more powerful waves.
- Yep, yoga under the right instructor is a lifetime thing and has enormous benefits for any surfer I reckon, look at Barry McGuigan, he's still winning contests at 83.

By fluid exercises I mean body movements done in a fluid environment, like swimming.

- This is a Catch-22, I do think that as you grow older you need to begin to substitute that desire for Battling The Elements with some smarts, use surf knowledge etc to avoid being caught inside too much and to make it easy on yourself when it happens, and also to do yourself some favours with equipment. Like I just won't ride an even quarter-way bad board any more, what's the point, when you can have near-perfect craft? Bad boards are part of history now.

Also, frankly I think a lot of guys of a certain age are not doing themselves a whole lot of good on SUPs, they look to me like they're straining and struggling against the paddle and against the weight and size of the boards, I wouldn't be surprised to see a noticeable increase in SUP related injuries -- back strain, knee strain, shoulder tendon tears, impact injuries -- to older surfers in coming years.

Hi

I have been having some minor shoulder problems as well. Came across this article in Tracks, sounds worth a try.

Don't fcuk around with shoulders, they can take a long, and I mean a long time to heal if you don't get it diagnosed right.

Go and see a specialist if you can afford it
This bloke had some good advice. :-o

You have my sincere condolances Grooter.

One of my rotator cuff tendons snapped in two, another had 50% tear (motorbike accident). Very painful 24 hours a day for about four months, there was no pain-free position at all, only bad and worse. Everything was healed and OK after 12 months. Very slow and gentle range-of-motion exercises for 12 months. That was over three years ago and it was good as new.

The non-stop pain caused significant depression that I found very hard to cope with and it exacerbated everything.

I've had a few more rotator cuff injuries since then, all came good within a few weeks.

I had a physiotherapist who accurately diagnosed what was wrong (my doctor was fcuking usesless), accurately predicted the recovery timeframe and gave me a series of graded exercises.

Damn Cranky sorry to hear that mate. That would have been tough

Seeing the physio in a couple of weeks, healthcare where I live here is excellent so hopefully I can get back in the water soon.

I've generally always had pretty good shoulders, knees etc. The orthopedic surgeon that I saw said it was mostly just due to age and over working it. I suspect my shitty posture and the longer hours I do working from home have not helped

Sounds bad. I have ongoing shoulder problems. I’ve tried a few tips from online Physios. One good one is creating a canyon for your shoulder when you sleep on your side. This basically just means putting a pillow under your armpit. Distributes the weight away from your shoulder.
