if there is a deep drop off next to a rock ledge (like point perp or becroft) get a live squid and put it about 6-12ft below a baloon on two live bait hooks.
one hook in the top, one in a leg separated by some tube off a coathanger.
or two separate loop knots.
then wait with the drag undone and always hold on tho the rod while waiting.or tie the rod to the rocks with a rope or surfboard leash while sitting there.
i do that for kings, it should work in indo for GT

just dont let go of my fishing rod and tighten the drag asap after hookup.
get joey, glowy or tory (bbsince89) to help and say gday to them for me.

while your there can you look around for Al's lost Banana?
live squid can be carried in a bucket and keep seaweed in the bucket to relax them

Reckon he might lose more than he lands with the drag undone?
GTs not exactly fair players and not having a (relatively) precise drag setting might hurt when he wants to put the hurt back on them. I imagine in the hook up scenario its either tighten up too much and be busted up or not enough and wrapped around a coral head straight away.

guard, you've got no shot of landing a big GT out of a canoe, in fact it might not even be a good idea to try. i got towed around in a 4m tinny for an hour before the treble straightened, and that was only a little one, 25lbs or so.
you need to be able to stand up and put some serious arc into the rod, otherwise you've got buckley's. if you're seriously strong, you might manage it sitting down, but i dare say you wouldn't be able to surf for 3 days afterwards.
if you do manage to get one to take a popper, it'll be short lived, but one of the most exciting few seconds you've had. being pulled into the sea is much more likely.

it's possible, for sure. if i remember correctly, there's some parts of Fiji where the initiation ceremony involves catching something big from a dugout.
you'll be sore though.

and not to take anything away from the bloke in the video, that wasn't a huge GT.
I was thinking more of something like this...
