Re: Thailand waves ???
I've looked into this and its not that hard anymore. All flights are internal from India. A lot of infrastructure was ruined post 2004 tsunami which has pushed travel up a little, boats still tricky to arrange for surf travel once you are here though. Fed by the same swell trains that power the Mentawai and Telos Islands albeit a little more attenuated. About $1500 to Mumbai. A few hundred to Chennai and then a few hundred to Port Blair (Andamans). Not sure its the best destination for the wife and kids style trip though at presentrightbrainpositive wrote:Hey Mark, if you are really keen you should get out to the Andaman/Nicobar Islands. I know that the reefs were affected after the Tsunami but with a little research I reckon you will still find waves that will be a LOT better than the best day at the best break in Thailand.
Getting there won't be as cheap as a local flight within Thailand but I reckon it would be worth it

Re: Thailand waves ???
The Andamans only works well at NE/SW monsoon transition months earlier not much swell, later too much wind

Re: Thailand waves ???
I am also going to Thailand in july and returning in August.Since 2004 and every year after,I have been travelling to Phuket, taking my own boards and have surfed Patong,Karon,Kata,Naiharn and Kalim...my choice is Kalim,a reef break not unlike Long Reef inside bommy...sort of..!!??
Kalim can get good and I have surfed it at 3-4 feet alone...
The beauty of Thailand is NO CROWDS...Altho' Kata Beach can be a little crowded but nowhere near Aussie standards...
The onshore winds will blow the crap out of the waves for days, but when the wind drops...woo hoo..!!
In the 2 weeks you're there, you're bound to crack a few good days with long sessions...
Thailand is not full on hard core surfing...but heaps of fun, uncrowded and delicious Thai food and cheap too..!!...

Re: Thailand waves ???
epic holiday, had 3 surfs in 3 ft wind swell at Phuket, not great but still fun. Warmest water I have ever surfed in..the place is great for a holiday without real waves, food was all time and so cheap, definitely goin back. The waves were pretty poor but it was fun to surf there anyway, the local Thai surfers go ok, couple of them were askin me lots of questions bout the waves where I am from and stuff and when they found out I was a shaper they were pretty keen on gettin a board....there is definitely waves there but not of a great quality but there is a few spots that would get waves for sure when the conditions were right...I did see a spot from the air which looked like a left hand reef set up, not great but definitely some considitent shape there, not too far from the airport....if anyone wants a non surf hol, Thailand is great....

Re: Thailand waves ???
nah, didnt take a board and glad too...had lots of flights and cabs and diff places to go before we went to Phuket where the waves were...would have been a real pain to drag a board around....hope you score on your trip, you must be pumped...what boards you taken this time mate ???
some pics of a few waves, they were pretty average but better than the pics show, water was so warm, must have been close to 30 degrees I reckon.... I hired a Tiki quad, 6'0 x 20 x 2 1/2", went ok but had to change the fins as they had them in all wrong and had a 9ft mal leash on it that was about to break, their surfboard knowledge is very limited but they just wanna surf and have fun, it was good to see it. One local guy dropped in on me on purpose just to let me know that it was his local beach, I just smiled at him and he said to me in his best Aussie accent " Sorry Mate, didnt see you ", I replied, " no worries mate, I'll do the same to you when you come to Australia"...Him and his mate surfed ok ( bit below average for Aussie standard but they were the best in the line-up, they were watching every wave I caught and asking lots of stuff about waves in OZ...it was cool, I'm sending a few shirts over to them soon...They had shitty boards and dings all over the place, wish I was a rich bugger, I would have thrown them on a plane and showed them some of our waves and coastline and sent them home with new boards...

Re: Thailand waves ???
Nice one Mark, that top shot looks like it would be worth going out for a hoot. That's about what I found when I was in Phiuket. Same deal as you though - wasn't a dedicated surf trip so anything that happened to come along was a bonus.
