Hi Loofy, I've not been myself but have been told by others that the trade winds can be a real problem in the area, although they may be on the wane if you are lucky, especially if its later in september.

Good luck.

you have to stay at the resort to surf that left mark, guys have been chased off by local police with machine guns.

there are heaps of waves, but most are really hard to access and open in some way to the wind.

a boat charter would be worth considering.

sumba will always be frontier land.

prid -> http://www.nihiwatu.com/

not sure if i would stay there personally, i don't really agree with his ethos - some of it is admirable, but i can't shake the part it which isn't.

there are heaps of other options, but you need time.

I agree with that general viewpoint. We were ther for 2 weeks in July 05. The first week was great crowd and wave wise..... The second week was a nightmare when about 10 bus loads of assorted euro trash turned up including French Kite surfers.....aaargh!
Numbers in the water got up to about 40+ at one stage that week. There is heaps of other waves in that area if you care to explore though!

I'm with Loofy and Pridmore,

Have surfed a lot of places in Indo over the years,
This time got 10 days left over from a Bali family holiday
in August and wanna surf somewhere different and uncrowded.

Have spent most my time up West,
this time thinking of going East of Bali.
have done Lakey Peak, not again.

Surf camp or village, cheap boat trip or even local boat,
have a medium budget.
Lombok, Sumbawa, or Sumba. i dont mind, just away from the crowds.

Any info appreciated,
feel free to PM me if you wanna keep it low key.
