Surf TV/WEB series

Post by Driftwood Cinema » Tue Mar 05, 2013 9:08 pm

Hi everyone, i'd like to introduce myself, Owen Rennie from Driftwood Cinema.
2013 i plan on producing an Australian surf web/TV series. I'm quite new to the surf industry, i have previously been involved in producing a Muay thai series but now that's complete here i am.

My question is- I'm trying to find interesting stories/ people to feature in the series... Young up and coming surfers... So far i've been talking with Connor O'leary as he's in my home town Cronulla and Ask Keillah as i believe he has an interesting story...I need more names

So can anyone recommend names? stories? Any suggestions at all?

You can follow the making of www.facebook.com/TheSurfer.com.au if you like.

Thanks

Owen

Wonder how many of the shots on facebook are subject to copyright.
Could end up Owen Money.

May be that the oldies on RS are cynical. :~

Wow, you guys are a tough bunch....Thanks Reginald for your answer.

I've surfed my whole life.. When I say I'm new to the industry I mean I don't follow it.. I don't read many mags or live on forums....

I am doing my research and reaching out on here was just another way!

I don't understand the attitude and answers from some of you do I'll leave it. I'm a film maker.... Asking for suggestions... Maybe someone on here has something interesting to share??

As for the facebook copyright remark, that makes no sense mate, do your research... Nothing illegal about sharing/postings surf images...

Anyway, if anyone is keen on posting useful comments please do and feel free to follow our page. We start shooting in 2 months.

Thanks
Owen

I wish you all success truly my remark about the photos you are posting If they have already entered the public domain ie someone else has posted them on Facebook or they are your own shots no problems but if you are posting stuff from other publications you could well run into problems and they will cost you dearly, I hate seeing people with good intent smashed by lawyers.
I always get a written release of any stuff that I'm not sure of it covers my back and I'm still thinking that some of the shot you've used could be problematic!
It's advice not criticism :!:

Ok thanks mate, all i have done is simple found cool looking images on FB and google and saved them and shared them. I've given credit when i can but half the images i find aren't watermarked or do i have any idea where they came from... Thanks for your concern though.... As a photographer myself the last thing i want to do is run into those troubles....

you paddled up the inside on your first post.
then asked us to hand over content and contacts for your commercial and professional gain.

the people here have shown support for other forum members in their endeavours to document and comment of all things surf-related. and to think it all could have been yours...

Yes i feel like some of the posts were a little harsh... but i can handle that.. I understand you guys are probably a close community and i respect that.
I haven't asked anyone to hand over anything they are not willing to share.. I merely asked a question.. For example- What if your little brother has been putting in hours in the water, surfing 10 hours a day, dedicated, driven, determined to make it on the tour.. quit his day job, blah blah blah.. what if he'd love the opportunity to be featured in a series that could possibly give him worldwide recognition? Give him a better chance at obtaining sponsors to cover his expenses on the QS etc etc..... Don't you think by me posting this it could lead me to people like that and everyones happy?? Does that not make sense? was i too straight to the point? Should i have sat on the shoulder and commented for 3 weeks before i (paddled to the inside)? or just went straight to the point like i did?

Anyway.. i'm not here to argue, i'm a filmmaker.. i'm not in it for profit, i recently just produced a muay thai series to help the community... i posted the same question on a muay thai forum and had hundreds of names thrown at me.. and a lot of greatfullness for what i did to their sport... Although i agree surfing doesn't need the exposure.....

Hope you guys will forgive me crashing your forum and if anyone wants to share some stories i'm listening.. feel free to contact my email on [email protected] if your afraid of being attacked here :)

Please argue, that is the whole point behind so much of the posturing and name calling on the forum it ain't no closed shop more like something written by Hitchcock, you have a range of journalists through to absolute dissolute derograde dingbats but theyare the stories in themselves, work out this lineup and you can hit Hollywood. On this site reality is stranger than fiction, one spot where the outsider is inside.

Stick with your project and us there is dross to wade through but gold is there.

Copped a turned ankle from a roller blading incident. Stuffed up his boogie boarding for a week or so.
That something like your looking for drifty ?

Gidday Driftwood,
My suggestion for a film/documentary idea would be to get in contact with Webber Wavepools and ask if you could document the building of the first wavepool in Australia, which is being built on a farm a few hours drive west of Newcastle.

You could do a Kevin Mcloud/ Grand Designs style film where you visit and film progress every few weeks.

Another doco possibility is Surfers against Coal Seam Gas.
Not many people are aware that if the CSG industry takes off on the Northern Rivers of NSW they will be buiding a port up the Clarence River at Harwood Island to ship the gas to China.
To get large ships up the Clarence River the river will require dredging and this will be an environmental disaster, lots of nasty farm chemicals in the sediments at the bottom of the river and when disturbed will destroy the prawn breeding and fithing industry.
P.S as you can see I occasionally type with a lisp.

Edmund Blacket (1817-1883) was the most important architect of colonial Sydney and the major exponent of the Gothic style in the country.

What about a story about Nick Caroll, our resident surf journo?

Hes doing stories on other surfers and surfing all the time, I reckon it would be great to have a story about him for a change, and his grom-like enthusiasm for surfing, and his thoughts on modern pro surfing and the surf industry.

Hes contactable by this forum if you want to find him.

Theres another guy here called SURFFOILS who would be an interesting one too. Hes done some of the most amazing backyard experimentation with surfboards that he'd be really interesting (e.g. making ports/ducts through the board to be used in replacement of fins, making bodyboard surfmat hybrids, etc.). Very interesting fellow!
