A new real-time surf report app I developed

Post by shaharsol » Sun Sep 25, 2011 9:26 pm

Hi,

I surf in a beach with no surfcam installed in it. The closest surfcam is 10km away and it's crappy. So I can't ever tell whether there is a good surf or not in my home beach. I need to actually drive there. Many times for nothing but for the waste of fuel and time. Many times I don't go and later sorry for the surf I missed.

However, even if there was a surfcam on my beach I'm not sure it would have been enough. Surfcams are not perfect. They need to be installed, maintained, pointed at the right direction and broadcast a clear image. They usualy don't do any of that. In the best case, they provide a clue.

So I developed SwellPhone.

SwellPhone goal is to change that. Every one of us surfers hanging around with a smartphone in his pocket is a small surfcam by himself. All we need to do is to point the camera at the surf, and take a photo -- or click Record for a couple of seconds. And then report that image or video to the web so other surfers can see what's going on.

SwellPhone is just that. It's a mobile app from which you can take a video or photo of the surf spot, and submit it to the site where other surfers can view the report and make a better decision regarding when & where to go surfing. It's so easy to use and recognize the surf spot you're reporting from using the device GPS.

If we all start using SwellPhone, we can have a reliable and comprehensive source for real-time surf reports like never before! The power is in YOUR hands. Hope you'll use it.

Cheers,
Shahar

On the contrary. If I check the spot out on SwellPhone and it's packed -- I go elsewhere...

I'm with mkm - bad enough people texting and calling there mates when it's good.

You certainly won't be popular if people see you pointing your swellfone at the lineup.

My first reaction was to hunt this idiot down and snap his camera holding wrist but the stark reality is (troll or not) that this is probably going to happen.
The same way Coastalwatch crowded out South Narrabeen, the same way surf schools introduced line ups to German and Swedish backpackers.... so to will some lonely office working freak develop an App that will crowd out the last vestigial of surfers looking to escape the gumby sheep turnip pack.

U aint gonna get no love and support from me on here. I ain't built that way....I is built for war.

Watch it Kreepy he's based in Israel and like most Israeli surfer's is possibly Mossad agent, show disrespect and you'll be assassinated.
Photos of your beach will be filed for reference. Send photos of the burkini beaches

Get stuffed !!!
That image of Buffed Brad and mates gave me 3 different emotions in 15 minutes.
When I first saw it I cracked up laughing.....then the reality struck in that it was a negative statement about me than I got super angry then I took a tablet now I don’t feel anything. Happy, angry, nuffin.(or H.A.N for short)

Israeli!!! There you go... they’re the greatest photographers of Palestinian land.... only time before they brought their photo uploading tech here.

That's only two emotions there Kreeps, the third didn't register as anything. Either you got what you paid for or you got screwed over.

Zif I can get a refund .

I found a zip lock containing 3 tablets down the beach car park.

After taking the first one I fell over head first in the sand...the second one made me see things and this one has calmed me down.

So all in all quite happy with the find. :D

Let's ignore the fact there's already something on pretty much everyone's phone that does this, it's called Facebook.

Personally, I can't wait to start posting epic pictures of spots within 2 hours drive of the city, on days when they are absolute shite.
