Black page of doom
Dunno if it will happen this year but if it does it'll be during the coming swell i reckon. Does anyone else find it arrogant? We, the people that allow this site to gain sponsorship by our numbers become forced to wait to view the site in order to make us give more money. Other websites strive to become better to attract more viewers and, thus, sponsorship. However Realsurf employs patronising tactics. Opinions? I might be out of line but hey, its a forum.
This type of response seems to happen at this time every year. I was wondering when the first tight ar$e was gunna rear his head. Hosting websites such as this have operating expenses which advertising may or may not cover. If it does, only just. To me this site is a community service, it is never gunna make anybody a serious profit. Having worked in IT for many, many years I know the type of effort that is put into maintenance of such enterprises. I would imagine that all the crew that run this site would put in many unpaid countless hours so clowns like you fellas can complain about it on their forums. I have no problem with your right to say that this site is arrogant etc for expecting punters to cough up every year or cop the black page. And equally I have the right to say that you blokes are tightar$es who use this site but expect it all should be for free. If you want to keep a valued community service going, all the community who uses it should contribute to its upkeep. Idealistic – yes, is it ever gunna happen – no way, but if you wish to be a part of realsurf (ie use its forums etc) and don’t wanna contribute that’s fine but how about you pull your head in and don’t whinge about it.

poor attitude mate, that's the same sort of attitude the black page of doom shows
I've never seen a website try to extract money from its visitors so blatantly like this one (well maybe porn sites....)
and with a minimum donation of $25, he's got to be kidding.
greedy pric. most websites are noble enough to have a little donation button where you can pay a few dollars, but no not this one. only big dollars here. and anyway, $25 is only 50cents a week so no-one has an excuse not to pay

black page of doom is a page that comes up and blocks you from entering the site for 30 seconds when you go to realsurf dot com. unless you are a financial supporter of the site and have a pin to enter it's just a little bit of a hindrence, nothing bad at all really.Coops@DY wrote:What is the black page of doom and why are people so angry?

WTF has a support sticker go to do with it. Do you reckon everybody who supports auto has a support sticker on their forum name or would wish to. I don't agree with the BPOD either and I'm no tight arse for that matter. As pointed out earlier in the piece, it's actually the vast number of visitors to the site that keep it going. The forum registerees are who make the site really great... without us there is nothing. Power to the ppl, my fellow hippies.
What is it with this logic that everything on the net should be for free, except porno, eh Insomniac.
As far as I see it, there are 2 types of site. Those that are owned and set up by business for the purpose of flogging their products. The second are set up by Joe Public due to a certain interest they have. As these private sites grow they incur increased costs some of which may be offset by advertising etc. I don’t see anything wrong with realsurf asking for donations to keep something like this going. I do object to crew presuming they have a right to something created by someone elses labour and moaning and complaining about being inconvenienced. I don’t give a rats whether you guys contribute or not but i don’t think it is fair that you question the basic premise that donations are requested on.

If you really had to pay for it, there would be only one page that would need to be covered, thats front page. The rest of the site had been made largely by contributions from the members. The gallery - why would you need to pay for that, the photos are far too small for good viewing and dont need to be hosted on this site anyway. The forum - why would you pay for that, there`s one on every site these days and again its member contribution that makes it readable. Links - why would you pay for that, just search and you shall find.Dunno if it will happen this year but if it does it'll be during the coming swell i reckon. Does anyone else find it arrogant? So really there`s only one page that needs to be covered - front page. For someone that lives in front of the beach, can see the waves everyday, owns a website, wants subscribers to his website, then don`t you think we`d have a photo up every morning at 7am. Waiting untill 9 or 10 or never on weekends makes this whole subscription thing seem less than worth it. The reporters have also faded away over the last 5 years aswell. They were doing the sites job and you still wanted subscription fees from them- no wonder they left. If I have to pay for it, I want something better!
