How early will you go?

Post by Chrisp » Sat May 13, 2006 6:11 pm

Hey guys,

I was wondering how early you'll go for the early? I've been away with mates who went at 4.30 at the end of the non-daylight savings period, probably not overly early (it was light)

And I was reading an article (by Nick Carrol I think) about a surf trip in Cali where he met people who get out at 4.30......get in at 2.30 (yes that's am folks)

And I got to wondering how early do you go? I tend to go with the sunlight, but I noticed last night with the full moon it was pretty light outside, which got me to thinking about the semi-night surf.

Whatya reckon, anyone coming for a surf with me Monday morning at 3??

Usually 20mins before the suns up, not out of choice though. Have to if i wanna get a good session and to work on time. So pretty much 5:45 in the water year round. There are a couple months though where its dark until like 6:30 which sucks.

When i was from the age of 12 to 15 i would wake up at 4:30am! and run down and get there at 4.45 and wait for sunrise or just surf till it got bright.

Its crazy, like 4 hour surfs before school  . cant believe i used to do it.

now its 6am

One of the main reasons I rarely go out for the early is my flatmate. For me to get up to go out early I have to go to bed early, he's a night owl and I don't sleep properly until he goes to bed.

I have made it my policy over many years of surfing to never go for the early unless I'm within walking distance of a seriously good point break and I'm on holidays :D
Most city breaks are too crowded to bother about the early unless you know its going to be good. I worry more about the right tide. Can't tell distance in twilight anyway
I usually find theres a gap between early crew and up all night stragglers anyway at most beaches. If it works for you great but missing the early has its advantages too :D
The main issue is going to work on time I find

went out to dy point with a mate about a year ago. It was about 1.5 hours till light. the light on the point was good when your paddling out but when your on a wave its at your back and you just surf into darkness...........pretty strange feeling.

It depends on what time of the year for me. In winter I try and be there at about 4 and paddle out in the dark and get ready to catch waves as soon as I can see them well enough. In Summer I go at about 3. Ive been at midnight on a full moon once before but it was still pretty dark.

I dont think SA is that worse then anywhere most other places. I think people think just because we had 4 attacks last year that this place is crowded with white pointers. With the amount of people out in the water and the amount of sharks out in our waters I wouldve thought there would be more attacks...

hmm..i tend to disagree.I think Sydney and QLD have a higher concentration of surfers on their beaches than SA.I think it has more to do with the prevalence of fishing in your state (why people go for a surf/dive in SA when a fishing comp is on is beyond me) and the population of great whites in the water.

That being said, you must have a set of titanium ones to paddle out that early in SA.

Afraid not. A sharks main feeding times are just before sunrise and just after sunset.

You're still a one in a million chance of even getting sized up for a meal by one of them anyway let alone getting bitten
