Velzy was a great bloke. Unlike so many Septic SoCal old schoolers, he was totally not up himself.
Dale loved a ciggie (not recommending 'em, you understand) and rather than mount himself up somewhere as a Living Legend to be trundled out at tradeshows and the like, worked his latter years out in San Clemente's surfboard hotbed down around a street called Calle Valle, which is a jigsaw of industrial bays full of smelly hard-core boardmakers and car repair shops...just like bloody Brookvale.
Again unlike many Septic SoCal old schoolers, he never drowned himself in boardmaking sentiment. Rather he was quick to embrace developments in surfboard design and manufacturing, from original foam all the way to SurfTech. Even if Dale had the money, he wouldn't have paid $40,000 for an imitation Da Bull Black Cat model -- but he might have paid $40,000 for a good computer shaping machine. This to me was a sign that he didn't just love making surfboards, he knew what they were for.
It's no coincidence that he actually got one of the North Shore's best ripping waves named after him.
Vale Dale.

what's it like to surf velzy by the way?
V-land = Heavy. In a nice way.
Sad to hear about DV passing. I never met him but he always seemed like an interesting and passionate dude. There was a great piece on him in TSJ recently. one of those guys whose influence on surfing is probably benefitting all of us everytime we surf.
Mahalo Dale. [/quote]
