For those that have not read about Michael Paine's Hydrodynamics of Surfboards the link is below and makes a good read with plenty of imformation if you have some time to spare.

This other link is another from Michael Paine dealing mainly with prevention of future tsunami disasters.

Hydrodynamics of surfboards
Must be a poor surf day if you are browsing my web page!
In fact I am still trying to put theory into practice 31 years after my engineering thesis.
Swapped to a Mal last year and am still getting used to the extra inertia (good for catching em but harder to turn). Steve O'Donnell (Harbord Rd Brookvale) has done a great job shaping Mals to give lively performance once the speed is up.
As a precaution I also now use a Reaper Cheater inflatable rashy - saw it on the New Inventors last year. Doesn't get in the way of paddling or surfing but gives that little bit of insurance. It is similar to the lifejackets they demonstrate on airplanes - pull the tag to inflate.
So if you see someone wearing a rashy OUTSIDE their wetsuit...

someone that manages to find a way of turning something as exciting as a Mechanical Engineering thesis into an excuse to go surfing is a legend in my books.

A innovative bloke I know was wearing his own invention of the floatie rashy surfing 1-2foot beachie. He got flipped and broke his neck. He woke up on the beach luckily floating in on his back. That was a few years ago and after 12 months of having the metal brace screwed to his skull, he is again surfing. That was about 7 years back.
