My new skate journey continues. On Friday I took my son to a Real skateboard demo at Sydenham skate park (Ishod Wair, Kyle Walker and Zion Wright if that means anything to you). It was an interesting crowd: lots of beers, tatts and so much weed being smoked I nearly got passively stoned :-D-: (It occurs to me some parents might see this as something to steer their impressionable 12 year old away from but I'm pretty relaxed about it. He'll come across these temptations in his own way regardless of what I do or say.)

The skating was great, and I was really impressed with how the guys gave so much time to the kids; stopping to take selfies etc. I guess it's their job after all.

Bizarrely on Sunday afternoon we were coming home and drove past a park just a few minutes from us; the pros from Friday were there skating a set of stairs and filming. We jumped out and watched Ishod do about 20 runs and eating shit repeatedly (no pads or helmet) until he finally landed it. The two pros and photogs watching on had a spliff going (had to ask my 6 yo daughter not to breath in too deeply :-D-: ). Again they were really cool when my son spoke to them.

Skaters are generally a better bunch of people than surfers. A lot more relaxed and communal.

Oh definitely. And Zion Wright rips. Hopefully he was nailing some long grinds.

Yeah Zion was doing these huge airs over a gap in a ramp, and pushing the length of the park to get the speed up. My son was there mainly to see Chima Ferguson but Zion stole the show.

Sam Newman roughing up a few skaters in Melbourne apparently. Looks like he put the elbow in as well.

First time poster in this thread.
Picked up my first skateboard in 20+years. (Now 37)
Got a smoothstar 34”
Rusty as old gate. Fell hard about 5 times in 15mins. Pushed through for the next 15mins and strung a few smoother runs down the new smooth path at Greenhills. Had some xrays done in the morning, no breaks.
Bought some kookie wrist guards to help avoid breaks until i learn to fall again.
Could be in the running for TOTY19.
It’s good to have a flat day pass time that could potentially help my surfing, if i don’t kill myself in the process.

Had a crack at the kiddies side of the skate park in port Mac... couple of 8 year olds showing me how its done.

It’s good to be alive.

At that age, wrist guards aren't kooky. I had a stack last year (trying to teach my son a pop shuv it) and had x rays for a suspected scaffoid break, luckily it was heavy bruising only. Yeah, pads are cool.

I realised that this arvo. Went to the skatepark at green hills. More people wear protective gear than when I was growing up that’s for sure.

None of the pro street skaters seem to bother with padding. At the start of January I took my son to a Thrasher mag/independent demo at Sydenham. They were pulling off crazy shit - no pads or helmets. They do know how to fall and run out of a trick though. It's pretty impressive to watch how they do it

Perth used to have a great skating, jump bike, and BMX festival on the south shore of the Swan opposite the CBD. It was fcuking awesome, the skill level was unbelieable and the cross discipline rapport and vibe was great.

I think the limited supply of waves may be the root cause of a lot of the animosity/localism in surfing.

Localism doesn't really occur in all the bike based sports I've done, front up to somewhere new and you'll usually be welcomed.

Or join a band.
