That’s the type of skating i like watching and at least attempting to do. Surf style shredding, just carving hard, flowing without such a focus on “tricks”.

Vert skating, the aerial and acrobatics is impressive, but does nothing for me.

My boys have been focussing on vert skating lately.

It never ceases to amaze the attitude/culture difference at a skatepark and the encouraging attitude fellow skaters have and the way they share the ramps. My boys find it different to the surfers attitude to sharing waves.

Really?

skateparks here are way more ruled by cliques and local hot rats.

The idea that skate culture is some egalitarian dream compared to surfing is mostly BS.

Steve, I live it and see both sides daily. I'm speaking from personal experience across Sydney skateparks and surf spots.

Yeah Sydney surf etiquette is non existent, but even so it's still nonsense.

When the big dogs show up at the skate parks they claim their space, same as surfing.

There's just more "available resources" per person when skateboarding is all.

They don't Steve, I can name pro skaters and ex pro's who are at Mona, Sydney Park, Glebe, Meadowbank etc. And still give plenty of space to everyone. My boys have never had an issue from since they were little and learning. Scooters get no respect though.

Maybe Lennox surf is some utopia but plenty of east coast surf breaks, as well as Sydney, appear to have little etiquette.

Maybe, I've surfed around the world and I've never seen a break where kids don't get hooted, encouraged, etc etc.

Even moreso now.

The problem is adult learners clogging up breaks and they compete with kids for waves.

At a skatepark kids can go on the learner bowls/ramps until they get good.

Yeah, skating is far more inclusive from my experience, from leaner kids to, cliquey teenagers to pros.
Surfing on the other hand is not always so nice, basically I think due to the scarce resource. I’ve seen 60 year olds dropping-in on competent kids and getting cranky at them.

Concrete is abundant, waves are scarce.

Bondi, The Pass. Superbank.
They get encouraged by their old man as he pushes them onto waves in the middle of the crowd.

Yeah nah. I grew up skating, and have intermittently continued to this day. Though surfed consistently for the near same amount of time. Surfed countless locations, skated countless bowls, parks etc.

On the whole, the skating community and vibe at any given location is way more accepting and welcoming than surfing. And yes, fair to assume due to scarcity vs availability of said resource.

I'd say it's more indifferent.

Everyone skates with air pods now and people generally DGAF about other people being there, showing up.
