The Tulla Tub

Just went up the road to check the Urbn surf Melbourne Surf pool. Quick report.

First thing I noticed pulling up outside was the noise They had it running and it sounds like the sea. Whats not like the sea is the relentlessness of it - its like an endless set. At the rate it was running today, I'm not sure they could fit enough surfers into the take off area to pick up all the waves being pumped out. We had a 20 knot southwesterly this afternoon and it was pretty chopped up at the bottom end but waves looked quite smashable up the top, however if I was paying top dollar I'd be going when there was less wind. Size is a good three feet on take off grading down slightly after about 50 metres. Urbn surf are saying there will be three distinct waves: experts , intermediates and beginners, but apart from the proper wave I could only see a short crumbly reform about 1- 2 ft high further down the pool. Unless they can lower the water level, it can't get any bigger than what I saw. The crest of the swell was only about a foot below the top of the wall. Although the wave is ready to rip, the place still looks like a construction site, buildings are mostly unfinished.

So there would be enough waves for someone to catch 40 waves in 60 minutes...or would they have to share with other surfers?

Its like a conveyor belt of waves getting pumped out at an unnatural rate. By the time you finish your ride and paddled back to the take off point i'd say 15 waves would have been ridden behind you. The Tulla Tub is going to put 16 guys on each peak. Not sure it'd be 40 waves but that might be possible if you were super fit. The Melbourne Weekend warrior is going to be seriously challenged by that sort of tempo.
The biggest issue I see is people falling off and then getting run over by the guy behind - you'd have to scramble to get out of the way after a fall.

People will come just for the parking. The Urbn surf car park is huge - also its on the edge of an airport/industrial zone with plenty of street parking to absorb overflow.

So you could drive down from Sydney for a morning surf if you liked driving long distances :-D-:

How did you get in to see it or can you see the waves from the road?
You can see it from the road. There are some big rocks out front I could stand on to get a pretty good view.

I could see a lot of people fitting in a surf as part of any trip to Melbourne. Lot of business trips involve having to kill an hour or two waiting for your flight.

Totally. I would, and I reckon they are smart cookies taking that into consideration. I heard somewhere that Syd-Melb flight is one of the worlds busiest. Could be big business!
