I firmly stand by my comment that without JJF (and, OK, Medina too) this so-called day of days would have been reduced to a freak show, notable only for the apparent inability of the professionals either to plan for or to surf in a scoreable fashion waves that were outside of their comfort zones and for the admittedly rather delicious schadenfreude of watching them get repeatedly pasted. Most of the surfing was simply awful
Yep, it was great fun watching though! I reckon they should have more comps in big shitty conditions
Fucken oath
Big shitty conditions rule

I don't reckon GSTQ fully understands how difficult those conditions are to surf.

Because context is important.

Because, when you say, “Most of the surfing was simply awful”, it’s a bit like saying, I've been looking at those winning mud runner kilometre split times and I beat them at the local oval last Saturday just doing a few laps!

It doesn’t help that, when you are paddling in those conditions with just your head raised a foot off the deck to get an overview, you really can't see what is going on.

When Maurice Cole was asked would today be like 1981 Bells, he said, No, it will be 10 times harder to surf.

So what? JJF, Medina and to a lesser extent Owen Wright showed that high performance, genuinely exciting surfing was possible out there. Most of the rest - people who do this for a living, let's not forget - just looked pitiful by comparison, whether through lack of preparation, poor board choices or just not being good enough.

3 good guys and 41 guys getting pounded. That’s entertainment!

Steve nailed it in his article. I watched most of the heats but missed the Italo drama. JJF and Medina just looked a step above.

Why on earth was Owens spare not waxed?! Lol

Yep, huge conditions, boards getting snapped everywhere and your back up is not waxed. They call themselves professional?
