I don't disagree at all Nick. But how did he get those 17ths on those occasions. At least a few times were probably due to the mediocre crap he served up today.Nick Carroll wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2019 1:41 pmIt's got nothing to do with mind. It's just statistically almost impossible. Nobody's won a world title with two 17ths as throwaways. Only one person (Kelly 2010) has won with one 17th as a throwaway.Gumby wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2019 1:02 pmCan't see it happening any year until he sorts his mind out. Just doesn't seem to have any mongrel on a consistent basis. How many heats has he thrown away in the past because he's just sat their waiting for a perfect wave that's never going to come whilst his brazzo opponents will chase waves like men possessed? Chopes last year, needed what, a 1.5 or something to progress out of round 2? Could have caught any sloppy ripple and got the score but sat there waiting while the clock ran down. And he ended up coming within a heat or so of the world title.Nick Carroll wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2019 12:49 pmJulian’s cooked. No world title for you this year mate.

Re: Bells Beach
Yeah it's odd. That waiting game was his classic weak spot three years ago and he seemed to have shed it last year. When he loses that way he goes into a really negative space, you heard him talking with the WSL camera, it was all because the heat wasn't at Winkipop. When in fact he got beat by a guy who really wanted the heat.

Still can’t get any vision of the contest on the WSL site. The ads of course work Ok.
Re: Bells Beach
I think you have to watch on the facebook app on a mobile or tablet. Poor quality streaming working on my laptop via the wsl site.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Re: Bells Beach
I tuned in this morning over breakfast expecting the 50 year storm and caught five intermittent minutes of the Kolohe heat in 3ft wanky pap. It struck me yet again how much of a non-spectacle it is. Poor quality waves and boring surfing, further cursed by the zombie duo in the booth saying exactly the same dull crap that they have been for the last god knows how many years - Turpel throws a looping underarm, Potter swings and misses again and again and again. I can understand, even forgive, the elephant in the room that is the vast online clips repository featuring hugely superior surfing BUT ONLY IF YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS A CONTEST GOING ON OUT THERE AND THE UNIQUE PRESSURES THAT BRINGS. Pretending that we're watching two great buddies having a gay old time in the most fabulous waves you've ever seen, where we frown momentarily at the arrival of some scores interrupting this blissful reverie before returning to joyous reminiscences of Taj Burrow (TAJ BURROW!) is bordering on lunacy, is certainly insulting to the 27 people who know what they're looking at and presumably incomprehensible to the other 54 who don't.
It's probably a failure of imagination on my part, a lack of understanding of the 'digital consumer' and the myriad ways you monetise a sparsely viewed live feed but Jesus Christ this can't be viable. Not in the long term, surely.

Re: Bells Beach
you misunderstand the Australian leg business model Godsave.
road was closed in there it was so busy (Source Nick Carroll)..
Long as it draws a crowd in real life the Govts will keep backing it.
If that backing was pulled it would topple overnight, ala Fiji.

“We are on hold while we switch to Winki Pop”.
Dread words for any viewer.
If they are there, it’s because the swell is too weak and inconsistent for Bells. And that higher camera angle makes the manoeuvres seem even smaller. Wonky Pap.

Re: Bells Beach
Yeah I get that regional government has stepped into the bottomless moneypit breach vacated by the clothing companies but it still doesn't feel like a particularly sustainable business model. Perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps they'll focus on the 'stadium' approach and the govt reward for dragging x number of people to the beach or to the pool plus a bit of sponsorship plus a bit of VIP packages etc etc all adds up to something worthwhile. Still doesn't address my central point of it being pretty dismal viewing though. At what point do the assembled masses realise that the emperor is naked? Or perhaps they don't. One of the real downsides of being on the spectrum is the inability to tune in to what the people want, how they'll respond. To me, the thought of spending eight hours in the company of 50,000 Victorians packed into a freezing westerly chanting Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie Oi Oi Oi and watching a procession of goofyfoots safely windscreen wiper their way into the closeout gives me the shivers but no doubt to others it's the perfect Easter break
