Running two heats was pretty much a win. Although that format only translates to a few places on tour.

Dbah and pipe where 50-100 waves comes through every hour.

Medina>daylight>Italo>everyone else.

I’m in the hate Medina camp, but holy shit, he’s just a class above everyone.

Not really ... points still have a limted take off zone - ie whoever's inside you has to fall off to give you a wave. Dbah and Pipe/ Backdoor are pretty big playing fields with multiple take off spots. that's why it works so well there and not many other spots.

Maybe supertubos, or Rio as well (if they're pumping)

Well I think the dual heat thing is OK if you’re a spectator but it is tricky as fcuk if you’re a judge.

The whole idea with one on one heats is that you’re scoring a heat in some level of isolation. Scores are often balanced in a heat, surfer against surfer. After all, one person wins and the other loses, that’s all that counts in any heat. You will often hear things from the head judge about how they have to assess who’s done the best work in a heat and tune the scores very slightly in response.

All that gets way harder when there’s two heats in the water at once. At Pipe, it’s pretty simple really, people get big scores or shitty little ones. It’s like 8.5 or 2.5. At DBah, heats are being decided on moves and on scores of 6 and 7. How do you judge one surfer against another, twice at once?

They’ve been going OK so far but it’s felt to me like it’s been on a fine edge. I dunno the rules but I hope they pull it up now and just let the quarters be one on one solo.

Well I guess that’s what they get paid for

Watching today, I realized that, apart from jjf and (grudgingly) Medina, I would prefer to watch Steph surf than just about anyone.
I think she hooked me at jbay
😃
