Pinhead goes normal

Post by pinhead » Sat Aug 18, 2018 3:33 pm

I've been riding alt shapes and constructions over the last 10 years and felt I needed to get on something mainstream again so I made myself a "normal" board. 5'11" x 19 1/8" x 2.4" 29 ltrs. PU/PE designed in shape 3dx and cut on an APS 3000. Haven't used PE resin before and probably won't again - stuff stinks too much. This is a winter shape for surf coast Vicco.

They're Tallowwood - I can't find anything that won't wash off.

Tallowwood’s beautiful, my floors, stairs, and decking made out of it. Really like it.

I'm trying big template fibreglass in front and something upright in the back to start off with. Fronts are PG7s and rears are cut down Slater 2.1 fronts.

I think the foil in the rears makes a big difference

Nice board.
Is the table tallow wood too?
Oil is not required unless they get seriously old. If you must....you have to cut it back with turps before applying any oil. I wouldn't though.

sweet looking stick.

would go unreal with a fuller foil (not sure how foiled out this one is) and as a thruster around here on the points. looks really similar to my 5'11" I use as a step up. heaps of foam out to the rails for paddling, then all performance bottom curves & rocker.

Yes I've hidden a bit of foam in the deck roll although the rails are still HP rails. Also carried a bit of foam in the nose and in the stringer under the back foot. The deck 1 point on the slice profile is the brown line in the profile screen. Pink line is the stringer bottom. the concave is deepest between the feet and you can see it drops below the rail line behind the back fins.

The back fins have a flat foil on the inside.

No the table is Kauri. Was painted grey, looks to be from the 1950's. Mrs Pinhead got it from a Salvo's for $20.

Had a bit of a dig on Wednesday. 3-4 ft Winki with the odd bomb. A bit of power but too straight and sectiony . Board paddles and catches waves really well, feels nice and flowey, wide sweet spot. Been riding a 5'7" fish the last year, need a bit more time to adjust. Might have gone a bit too big on the front fins - will try something with less tip area.

Or right foot on the back spot, as the case may be.

Not sure, I did a couple of big swoopy carves without having to think about where my back foot was, but then I tried to stall for a close out barrel in the end section and got pulled up the face and pitched. Which made me think I should try smaller fronts.
