Mum emailed me some old documents about my great-great grandfather Charles Lewis who was caretaker of Kirra Surf Life Saving Club and said I can consider myself a kind of Kirra local. I'm chuffed no end. Never even surfed the place. Should do one day.
And I was a member in the early sixties.

Great Old Grandpa Charlie must have been a bit of a troublemaker. :)

HEATED EXCHANGES

COOLANGATTA COUNCIL UPROAR

CLASH IN STREET FOLLOWS

Challenges to fight, and the exchange of uncomplimentary epithets, were frequent features during a heated debate at the last meeting of the Coolangatta Town Council. On several occasions pandemonium reigned and spectators in the body of the hall joined with the aldermen in this display. At the conclusion of the meeting, a fight took place in the main street of the town, and a general melee was only averted by the arrival of the police.

The matter arose in connection with a request made by the Kirra Surf Life Saving Club for the appointment of the caretaker of the club building, Mr. Charles Lewis, an honorary beach inspector, for the purpose of checking the growing practice of surfers, who use surf boards indiscriminately in the crowded bathing areas.

Following on cross-firing between Ald Winders and Johnston, and interjections from a section of the public in the hall, Ald Johnston said there was too much officialdom on Kirra beach 'by certain self-appointed' persons, and people were complaining of a curtailment of their liberties.

Ald Johnston, addressing Ald Winders, said: 'You and your club have done their damndest to smash this council, and that is where the petition to oust this council originated from.'

Ald Winders: Rot! The club has no interest in the petition. This is the sort of tripe we have to listen to here.

The Mayor: It is a great pity that we are forced to listen to you.

Ald. Winders: Exactly. You would have a fine old time if I was not here.

The Mayor said that he thought the council should take the whole show over at Kirra, building as well.

After further heated discussion, the appointment was defeated on the casting vote of the Mayor, the decision being applauded by a number of spectators. Further trouble arose when the Kirra Club nominated a member for the position and the recently formed Coolangatta Municipal Surf Life Saving Club nominated a member also.

The Mayor said that it was not for the Kirra Club to say who should be appointed. The council was paying the cost and would make any appointment it thought fit.

Ald Winders: The nominations made by clubs have been adopted by this council ever since the inception. of the patrol system. The man you intend to appoint is at present under suspension by the Kirra Club, and it is most unfair to place him in charge of the club gear.

Ald Carlin moved that the Kirra nominee should be appointed. If the appointment was made from another club it was going to lead to trouble.

The Mayor: You start your trouble and see how far you will get. You life savers cannot come here and dictate to the council.

Ald Winders: Ald Carlin and myself are not speaking as life savers, at this juncture. We are speaking as members of this council.

The Mayor: Sit down!

Ald Winders: I will not. We have as much right here as you have.

The Mayor: You! Who takes any notice of you! Sit down! Sit down!

Ald Winders: Sit down be damned. I'll sit down when I have had my say.

Ald Mills was urging the selection of the Kirra Club nominee, when the Mayor advised him to 'cut it out,' as no one wanted to hear him.

Ald Winders: It's no good, Ald Mills. You will not get a hearing here if you do not agree with the Mayor's views.

The Mayor (addressing Ald Winders): It's a pity you’re here, all the support you get is one vote. You tried to put this council out of office and failed.

After further acrimonious debate, the nominee of the Coolangatta Municipal Club received the appointment.

At the conclusion of the meeting a number of youths assembled outside the council hall and when Ald Winders and local pressmen emerged, they were subjected to considerable heckling. It is alleged that a party of youths, in company with a member of the council, followed the press party along the main street and again indulged in heckling and threats of personal violence, which necessitated an appeal being made for police protection. An encounter, which threatened to develop into a general melee, was averted by the arrival of the police.

The Winders family remained active in the area for years.
Mick Winders (probably a son or grandson), was a good friend of my step dad. Think he was a councillor too.

Rival to Father Neptune Kirra Identity
(By F. Carew)

FATHER Neptune has a rival— at least, a rival for one small portion of his vast kingdom. During the week-end thousands of holidaymakers visiting the South Coast will see and no doubt will exchange pleasantries with this bold personality. Many of them have met him frequently in bygone years, but would not recognise him in his new role, so let me Introduce 73-year-old Charlie Lewis, proprietor of the Pacific Ocean (Surfing Section), Coolangatta, Queensland. Modest, kindly dispositioned Charlie would be the first to disclaim such a high sounding claim as a reality, but he is justly proud of the compliment implied when he received a letter through the post recently bearing the above address. Charlie's real job is caretaker of the Kirra Surf Saving Club's pavilion. The main part of his job is to look after the dressing room supplied by the club at a small charge (proceeds to the club fund) for the use of bathers. From dawn till nightfall he is to be found at his post, a fount of advice and reminiscence for the surfers.

SURF EVERY MORNING
'Morning, Charlie! How is she?' (meaning the surf) is the usual inquiry. The answer is always correct, for it is based on personal experience. Every morning, winter and summer alike, Charlie has his surf long before daylight breaks, 'just to try the water out for my customers,' as he naively explains. Then follows a brisk constitutional along the beach to Tugun, and he never fails to be back at his post well before the arrival of the first regular. This has been his unfailing practice for the last ten years, except in one or two rare instances when indisposition has ruled otherwise. This freedom from illness Charlie avers to be due to the marvellous tonic of his beloved Pacific. ‘Don't waste your time with this new fangled, glandular stuff, have that early morning surf’, he stoutly offers as advice.

WEST TO EAST
Charlie's pre-Coolangatta days, in comparison with his present mode of living make one of those queer little paradoxes that students of philosophy find so intriguing. For well on half a century before coming to the coast, he was stock keeping and droving in far western Queensland. He experienced the whole gamut of life outback, so graphically described by Lawson:

The old year went and the new returned, in the withering weeks of drought.

He lived through the harrowing experiences of thirst and hunger stricken cattle and sheep dying in thousands, broken squatters who refused to stay broken and turned with the indomitable will to rebuild, and a thousand and one other vicissitudes of a vast land where men do live the life of men. He loved the west, and in proof thereof gave the 50 golden years of his life willingly towards conquering his environment. He can recall the boom periods and many a happy out back spree that atoned in some measure for the more rigorous times.

Now in, the autumn of his days, we find him where he can always gaze upon an illimitable expanse of water, a contrast of which he never tires after the sun scorched hinterland. Calmly, philosophically he sits and puffs contentedly at a trusty old briar, optimistically confident that he will attain his century in years — 'Good luck, and we hope you make it, Charlie,' will be the sincere echoing sentiment of thousands of his customers this Easter week-end.
