Fcuk, the girls absolutely ripped today. I wasn't there so I know that sorta puts me at a remove but, wow. It's a good day not to write a whole lot of cobblers and just get out of their way, let the performances do the talking I reckon.

Yep, and Tyler, Carissa and Steph getting knocked out in the quarters suggests an increase in depth in the women's comp.

The women are still light years behind the men though and the men’s event, as a spectacle,is pretty tedious. Can’t believe many people are watching more than the odd five minutes of the women’s

As a live spectacle, it was very entertaining.

I was quite shocked at the surfing done by Lakey Peterson....it was probably 30% better than the mental estimation I had of it before I saw it.

what makes the womens so good is the format. 17 surfers, and now with no non elim rounds after round one, it's even better. as a plum average surfer, myself i can actually relate to their surfing more. Not extending that outside arm through cutbacks, not getting full torque and extension from turns and wraps in the pocket and off the top...

the men's is tedious on top of tedious bcos it's so damn long. throw in the fact all the men are pals and bros and totally devoid of any personality or mongrel and, really men's comp surfing on a sporting scale is somewhere around test day cricket between sri lanka Vee bangladesh meets the partridge family on anti depressants.

Something about that Australian style commitment seems to rattle the world champ a bit. He doesn't wanna be in that kind of fight.

They ran some footage of the same heat from last year and it just showed how much better the waves were last year, ouch.
