I paddled out with Davo when the crew started towing and the first thing I saw was the wave that ripped Bruce Irons's board shorts off.

We sat in the channel a bit inside the boats, of which there were quite a few. We kind of played dodgems a bit with the sets, it was fcuked up. 25-30' waves drawing up and exploding on the reef 20 metres away. Kerrzy told us that Danilo Couto had been doing the same thing and an extra big set came through and he just vanished. There was some very cool calculated ski driving going on from the guys who were slinging people in then picking them up inside the foam line, and some pretty gnarly instances of drivers pulling up -- not wanting to go in there despite their partners getting fcuking chewed on the reef. Numerous injuries and a coupla concussions in there.

There was a lot of people in boats who shouldn't have gone near it, when a set swung a bit wide their faces were amazing studies in pure terror.

Nathan Fletcher's ride that day was from some other planet. Looking down and in on him fighting the foam ball on that thing, epic.

After about three hours we paddled back in, just doing that was a really serious exercise in strength and water skills.
