Yeah it looked great for the most part, aside from a bit of sketchiness here and there with them trying to adjust.

It wouldn't need to be any retro/alt craft either. Just anything that would help take away the present unsightly wood peckering in between their acrobatics.

Most pros could easily do the smooth carving style, but the need to do major manoeuvres (i.e. rail-burying, fin-baring, water throwing, extreme redirections) to win heats means they have to cut some style corners, particularly when trying to return to the power pocket as quickly as possible.

Wilko looked awful. He couldn't ride it.

Nothing worse than seeing a great section destroyed by a flashy re entry when it was obvious a barrel was on offer. Usually means they don't make the next section as well.

Definitely need more time on your backhand to work out what can and can't be done.
Thought living in Byron, Wilko might've had it a bit more sorted though.

Only ever seen him surfing beachies and breaks South of the Cape, never actually in town.

He looked like he was trying to turn off the fins rather than the rail.

by "better" I suspect you mean more relatable.

J-Bay is a simple sorta wave in some ways but it is a bit of a conundrum for the judging system, hell we have been here before, not re-hashing that one. But the normal question asked of CT pros, i.e. how vertical can you turn and still make the wave, needs to be re-phrased a little bit for this joint. That's what's cool about JJF, he is surfing the way the wave likes you to surf, i.e. a bit laterally in the turn angle like God points out, but he is still surfing extremely close to the lip and pulling full phase turns from there. Carrying the panel a bit toward something again.

yeah well on his boards, the rail has rocker. Wilko surfs off instinct and his instinct took him to the rail, but the rail rocker on those boards is v straight, so it took him to weird places that threw him a bit. Given another surf he'd have been steezing the shit out of that thing.

Lil note, I think those boards are being donated to the local poor kids surfing charity. Corona are throwing the book at this event, they are sidelining the usual WSL program to some extent.

Smooth carves. Jordy and Connors cutbacks were sweet

Fcuk! I got the wave I wanted to get at Bay this morning, the wave I had in mind. From way the hell back up the point past Boneyards, the very top, through to Impossibles. I don't really know this reef properly yet, but the wave came, so I went. It's kind of squared up out on that bit but needs a slight taper and swing so you have room to gain speed before it just rockets off down the line. 6'4" Spear responded as she should to each piece of reef. Like a really solid 6' wave Iggy measure, or a bit past double overhead for everyone else. I came down into Supers where maybe 10 CT guys were sitting just itching to drop in on me, but manfully they resisted their worst impulses. Instead they just grinned and let me skid through into the gorgeousness of that long middle stretch. The wave shifted from quite raw to something a lot sleeker. I went in and out of the barrel in a sort of half-manner pretty much from start to finish. I don't really know this wave well enough to know just where to bury myself and where to run, and I didn't want to blow the chance, so I just kept looking for the faster lines. I paddled back out slowly, enjoying the adrenalin tingle, and back out to the CT guys who were still grinning at me. "Byrning Spear!" shouted Jordy. "Thanks for showing me mercy," I told them, and Wilko said something cheeky about how I should do the same. "You gotta respect your elders," said Seabass. I wonder if I can work that elder respect bullshit a bit more here.

brendo yeah I will bring forth the ten channel at some point in the next two days of smoking magnificence for sure.
