Another one gone. Primitive Surf closing down

Post by Trev » Fri Jun 02, 2017 1:52 pm

All the best Craig Rees and thanks for the past 22 years.

Details

After 22 years, making nearly 8000 surfboards, 1 Billion laughs, Millions of waves and meeting thousands of amazing people, Primitive Surf is calling it a day.
Under instruction from the bank, a poor summer of waves and sales, we are shutting the doors next week and having a massive CLOSING DOWN SALE THIS WEEKEND.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

The imports have beaten him.

Genuinely nice guy who has a rep for going the extra mile when developing a board for you.

It's the clothes that bring the coin, not the boards.

Never been there, or even knew it existed. Back in the day goodtime at the Gabba was the only actual surf shop I knew of in bris, but it was pretty crap.

Was he trying to beat the imports at their own game?
Not from what I understand.
He reputedly made good boards at a fair price.
It was a pretty large shop footprint but for a few years now, his shop, within sight of the Gateway Motorway at Nudgee is a rather strange place to have a surf shop.
I 'm not sure where he was originally but I think he's always had a reasonable clientele and probably thought it was enough to go on with when he moved.
Never been in there myself but I know a few guys who swear by his board making abilities. Plenty of accessories (including wetties and clothing etc).

He's related to a guy I've been friends and worked with for nearly 50 years; I met him at a wedding and had a couple of chats to him out in the surf over the years.

So, Trev....we can see here you are actually feeling guilty about driving past his shop all those times and not going in to buy some wax or a new leggie.

Not in the least.
I buy from local surf shops, preferably with a manufacturing facility. Like Beacbeat.
He was too far away.
And I recycle my wax. :-o

So do you use something like those soap savers they advertise in that Innovations Magazine?

Nope.
I've explained it on here before.
I keep all the shavings from the wax comb and melt them down in an old jam tin. Add in all the scrapings if I clean a board off to re-wax.

Not really. Most of the rubbish falls to the bottom of the tin and you leave it there when you pour it into moulds.
It's opaque though, so not perfectly pure but I hate waste. Just my little contribution I guess.

Plus I'm a cheapskate.

Just sell one of your investment properties Trev. You're a boomer so clearly you've got some.

Being a cheapskate is how you get to afford investment properties baba.
I must have started too late.

The only investment property owners I know are Gen X or Y.

I'm surprised reused wax retains its stickyness.
You are aware that this is the kind of behavior that has TOTY written all over it?

Trev, since that little gem isn't in there I think a feature article in Innovations is warranted.
