Why does the big island not get love for surfing?

Post by Kulharin » Wed May 17, 2017 1:01 pm

I read and hear often that surfing on the Big Island isn't nearly as good as the other major islands of Hawaii... What's the reason for that; given the size of the island I would figure there would be a lot of options? Lack of breaks? lack of quality? lack of consistency? A lot of people say if surfing is the main reason you're visiting Hawaii to surf, then don't opt for the Big Island?

Fresh lava makes poor beaches. The northern islands block winter swell.
It's not devoid of surf but Maui, Oahu and Kauai are much better.

I've visited Kauai, though I was a bit injured and a newb back then. Got some good times at Polihale and Hanalei and I would love to go back to Kauai. Maui seemed like it had a lot of potential when I was there during late Nov to early Dec... but the north shore was blown out while I was there; It was windy all day and all night most of the time north while the west & south shore had no swell. Oahu I would love to check out but I've heard the island is very busy and the surf is very crowded.

Yeah I agree. The Big Island has some great waves, especially compared to anywhere else except it's neighbouring islands!

Plus there is so much cool shit to do, the locals are much friendlier and the crowds are often non existent.

Go get some!
