Yeah it's kind of a pattern, at the start of an event everyone's all like "the WSL sucks! pro surfing's dying!" etc etc

Then the event gets into its meat and everyone is like "whoa!" Up and down depending on how their Fantasy Idiot team is going.

If it ends strongly with a couple of big performances, a la MR/Johnny, everyone claims the shit out of it. If a Brazilian surfer wins, everyone complains about it pretty much no matter what. If it ends in shitty surf everyone goes back to the original sentiment.

Weirdly enough all of the above keep watching.

Bells is going to have a couple of really spectacular days on the current outlook, there's something further out that could also produce a solid and possibly epic finale. But it will be haunted by these long formats as always.

Good waves seems to determine a good event or not, funny that.

If the Slater Inc. wavepool can't be made bigger and a bit less mechanical/predictable then how could more than one event (at the highest level anyway) possibly held in this wave?

(IMO WSL Inc. has wave pools as part of their 'grand design')

Nice to see someone completely dominate an event. That's really dominate impressively not do more backhand reoes than the next goofy. If JJ wasn't in that comp it would have been pretty uninteresting. He pretty much redefined the way to surf there IMHO.

john john does those same turns occy did in the skins event. perfect turns. the wave like, "ah!" come on, surf! please, please, pretty please.

Suddenly, the pro surfing dream, back in 88/89, it wasn't as sweet as it sound from the beach announcers.

Funny how JJF make every last one of us disheartened about our recent past - from the 90's on.

He is far from the field in some of the best conditions, but Curren in 1990 was pretty magic, as Nick Carroll might agree.

When you think about JJF and Pyzel, make some space to Curren and Maurice Cole.

It was revolutionary.

For the first time, a tour surfer had a small wave board that made him untouchable - all through Europe, 3 victories in 5 contests (actually 6 but TC skipped one, Sopelana)

And then it was Haleiwa, his first victory in Hawaii - timeless contest with an epic final.

NC could throw Santa Cruz, Burleigh and Bells here to enlighten us...

Not long ago, Dane Reynolds versus Joel was one of those breakthrough battles in surf history and Dane looked as powerful, fast and stylish as JJF las week.

I am only hoping for the Pacific to fire...

Well that's the point, isn't it?
The surfing is ok and sometimes sublime. But the format is drudgery layered with hyperbolic overcompensation.

Tbh i think the judges feel a bit pressured to throw scores 'in the excellent range' for surfing that is pretty safe. Kelly and Mick have been beneficiaries for years.

They should just have a meeting with the surfers and say that they need to really make the judges lose control of their bodily functions to get a 9, and a 10 should only be awarded for going right at Chopes or a backflip into a 6s barrel at restaurants.
