no, there's a handful that do....the reason is because it doesn't really get that cold...or the perception of cold isn't high enough.

Still plenty of exotosis from the dawn patrollers.

I also wear mine because I hate wearing sunscreen.

I briefly wore a hood for a while when I was paranoid about Surfers Ear. One memorable afternoon nose riding on my mal in a howling gale the hood filled up with air and stretched. Must have looked like a black balloon on my head.

Simply not true I'm afraid. The amount of heat lost through the head is proportionate to its surface area

Heat loss is ∼28% less from hair-covered skin (234 W/m2) than on the bare forehead (323 W/m2; Giesbredit GG, Pretorius P, and Bristow, GK, unpublished observations). No wonder poor old steve is shivering like a shitting dog

To tell the truth eggs are one thing I avoid buying when I’m grocery shopping. So you may say I’m an intermittent egg buyer who usually lets someone else buy them.

Here ya go steve, wade through this:

http://jap.physiology.org/content/101/2/669

It's quite interesting, although ultimately the study conditions are too distinct from the nature of the frequent but brief immersions in surfing to make any meaningful comparisons

I read that and it reads as powerful evidence in favour of hoods to me, unless you are desperately in need of some useless gesture to prove your machismo with.

Been a while since I've surfed down in Vic.

If i was to surf bells in aug. Would i get away with a 4/3 wetty or does one need to think about booties and a hood?
Those two 14 year old girls who charged it last weekend just wore 3/2s.

GSTQ, what happened to the theory that, unlike the rest of the body, blood flow to the surface of the head is not restricted when it gets cold, and in consequence more heat is lost from the head?

Fcuk me, I'm not a 14 yo girl anymore. 4/3 now. Couple of times I wanted the booties for the ground, but yet to wear them this year. When the wind is icy, a hood is great, albeit a little disconnecting. I actually use a hooded vest AND I wear it on the outside. Better because when you get leakage into the face it doesn't go straight through to your chest. Also better for getting changed post surf. Mornings have been quite icy of late. Water almost feels like a NNSW bath house experience. 3/2 for sure short term, but if you want to stay in for three hours, unless you're Welsh, you'll probably be pretty cold

I wore a brand new 4/3 the the morning for a dawny. Not because i needed to, I just wanted to test it out. Despite the buttery rubber it still felt like a suit of armour.
But i'd be in that thing every damm day in Vicco, fcuk getting cold. Can't surf when you are cold, can't think.

Do you wear boardies on the outside too :-D-:

Just drink a couple of liters of water before you go out, you'll be warm enough.
