One source of real energy in pro surfing is the tension between the panel and the surfers' performances. When they're in perfect sync it can be pretty boring, we saw a lot of that last year.

In awkward waves you see that tension re-emerge. It takes great performances in waves like this to seize the judging panel and drag it into a different place, you can see how Johnny did that yesterday, just kinda forcing the issue on to both the panel and his colleagues.

That's a world champ's job and Johnny's doing it, he's got a real shot at a repeat now I reckon.
