if my observations about Slater losing control of his fundamentals are correct then Margaret river, where on the right hander it's two turns and a finish, will expose him even more brutally.
all bets are off if it's at North Point

What's the forecast like? I've stupidly been conned into a tipping comp. I was a much much better footy player than I am a surfer, and have always gone shit in footy tipping comps so fkukk knows why I joined a bloody surfing tipping comp, but anyway, I'll have a crack.

it's a tricky, complex, open ocean reef that rewards really strong surfing fundamentals and looks dreamy as fcuk with that backlit Indian ocean in the afternoon. There's always plenty of waves ridden because it's a proper surf spot.
Nice time zone for east coast viewing too.

Thats funny because the only comps I can remember watching there have been dogs balls.

I think it is a bit of a wild card event. Form swings etc. Looks like a lot of offshore winds and small pulses of swell.

To me Bells is gonna be the big Tell event in Oz this year, I'm going to that one start to finish.

Nope, never surfed over there.

meh ... both bells and margs are totally dependant on getting pretty much perfect waves.

unike snapper, or tahiti, fiji etc where as long as there's swell, the waves work ... margs and bells needs winds, swell direction and swell to be remotely anything.

margs is a wave where surfing it is a battleground. watching people surf it, is a snooze fest. long way out, three taps to the lip and fattens out into the channel.

is it true the left barely even breaks anymore? what happened there?

I think the lefts just became obsolete most of the time due to the way modern surfing is scored.

I'd love to see it at solid Nth Point

Re Bells, the later Easter is, the better the waves. More chance of swell and favourable winds. In fact, they should think about dispensing with tradition and just run it starting mid April anyway. Moon phase good this year so it is a mid April start

The Box was great, watching a bunch of goofies struggle until Owen just went deeper and got it done. And Mellings wipeout was epic.

As for Margs, having surfed it and being an average surfer, it's a hard wave to surf well. The small ones are still big, the big ones are huge and you're a mile out to sea. It may not be a great contest wave under modern criteria but I certainly appreciate good surfing there more than other places.

Love to see it at North Point although doubt the swell will be big enough. The natural footers have an enormous advantage there though.

terrible wave for modern shortboarding, great wave for mid-length single fins.

had a great surf at 8-10ft Bells on my bonzer after the Fanning/Parko final in 2013.
